Process for the production of dynamo brushes.
In the manufacture of such dynamo brushes made of carbon and metal, it is difficult to achieve intimate cohesion between carbon and metal, while such cohesion is an absolute requirement if the good properties of such brushes are to be demonstrated. So far, either carbon bodies produced artificially by means of organic binders have been used for these purposes, which were not plastic per se or an organic binder has been added to the carbon-metal mixture in order to obtain an easily malleable material, or powdered and granular carbon was used, to coat it with metal and then to anneal and press it.
In the e. In the worst case either the escaping ones work
EMI1.1
Soldering does not achieve complete inclusion of the carbon, it will rather crumble off prematurely when the brush wears.
The present method now relates to a method of manufacturing dynamo brushes. which consist of carbon and metal in intimate union. According to the present
EMI1.2
If graphite is faded with nitric acid and then heated, it inflates considerably and worm-like structures arise, which under certain circumstances are many centimeters in length.
These structures are extremely plastic and are now provided with a metal coating electrolytically or in some other way. This reaction, which also cleans the graphite, does not occur with every carbon that appears as graphite, but only with the actual graphite, as a difference from the so-called graphitite.
The graphite metal bodies obtained in the way described above, which lack any organic binding agent and are of great plastic quality, are now 'pressed' into 'molds' and either heated so strongly that the softening metal firmly bonds them together, or they become less heated held together in solid form by a solder.
Such carbon brushes conduct electricity very well, protect the collector and wear very little.
