Process for casting axle bushes with screw-shaped narrow grooves.

Axle sleeves are known to be preferably cast in permanent molds. However, since the machining of the surfaces cast on chill molds presents great difficulties because of their hardness, the subsequent cutting of the helical lubrication grooves, which has been customary up to now, has proven to be very disadvantageous. According to the present invention, this drawback is remedied in that the lubricating grooves are already made in the casting using a core equipped with a correspondingly extending screw thread, whereupon the core is screwed out of the casting while it is still soft.

The drawing illustrates, for example, a device suitable for carrying out the novel method in vertical longitudinal section.
 EMI1.1
at its upper end a guide piece c for the spindle d of the steel core e. The jacket of the core e corresponding to the inner surface of the axle bushing to be cast in the mold b is equipped with a screw thread f which corresponds to the lubricating grooves to be produced. The spindle d can either be smooth like the associated passage opening in the guide piece c or, as shown in the drawing, be designed as a screw with the same pitch as the thread f; in the latter case, the passage opening mentioned is to be provided with a female thread.

In order to cast the axle sleeve, the core e is inserted into the mold b. Once the casting has been completed, the core e is slowly screwed out of the casting while it is still in a soft state, for which purpose the spindle d is provided with a handle 9. No further processing of the lubrication groove achieved in this way is necessary.
