Verfahren zur Herstellung von reinem Trinitrotoluol aus rohem Trinitrotoluol.
Das rohe Trinitrotoluol, wie es technisch gewonnen wird, muss behufs Reinigung umkristallisiert werden. Es geschieht dies zurzeit gewöhnlich aus Alkohol. Bei diesem oder einem anderen Lösungsmittel gehen die als Verunreinigung he'gemengten, niederen Nitnfrungsstufen als Abfallprodukte in die Mutterlaugen.
Es hat sich nun herausgestellt, dass das durch direkte Nitrierung gewonnene, rohe Trinitrotoluol weit vorteilhafter gereinigt wird. wenn man es bis zu etwa dem dritten Teile seines Gewichtes mit o-Nitritoluol auf etwa 800 erhitzt und dadurch eine stark übersättigte Lösung von Trinitrotoluol in o-Nitrotoluol herstellt. Beim Abküb'en der zuvor nitrierten Lösung fällt das reine Trinitrotoluol aus. Es wird abgeschleudert bzw. abgepresst und mit wenig kaltem Alkohol nachgewaschen.
Die technischen Vorteile dieses Verfahrens sind folgende : Die ab Nebenprodukte beigemischten, niedrigeren Nitrierungsstufen gehen beim Umkristallis eren nicht verloren, sondern bleiben im Lösungsmittel und werden, da dieses ja als Ausgangsmaterial für die Trinitrotoluolfabrikation benutzt wird, von neuem der Nitrierung unterworfen. Ferner kann die Produktion bei den gleichen Apparaten wesentlich gesteigert werden gegenüber dem bisherigen Verfahren.

The crude trinitrotoluene, as it is obtained industrially, has to be recrystallized for purification. At the moment, this is usually done from alcohol. In the case of this or any other solvent, the lower levels of pollution which are mixed up as impurities go into the mother liquors as waste products.
It has now been found that the crude trinitrotoluene obtained by direct nitration is purified far more advantageously. if you heat it up to about a third part of its weight with o-nitritoluene to about 800 and thereby produce a strongly supersaturated solution of trinitrotoluene in o-nitrotoluene. The pure trinitrotoluene precipitates when the previously nitrated solution is removed. It is spun off or pressed out and washed with a little cold alcohol.
The technical advantages of this process are as follows: The lower nitration stages added from by-products are not lost during recrystallization, but remain in the solvent and, since this is used as the starting material for trinitrotoluene production, are subjected to nitration again. Furthermore, the production can be increased significantly with the same apparatus compared to the previous process.
