 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

   "Improvements made to bearings or the like for rotating shafts, in particular to crankshaft bearings and connecting rod heads for internal combustion engines".

   The invention relates to bearings or the like for rotating shafts; it concerns more particularly (because it is in their case that its application seems to offer the most interest), but not exclusively, among these components, the crankshaft bearings and the connecting rod heads for engines with explosions.

   Its aim, above all, is to make the said organs such that they better respond to the wishes of the practice concerning them.

   It consists, mainly, in having recourse, to constitute at least part of the surface of the organs of the kind in question, in contact with the rotating shaft, to a vitrified material, for example a glass or the like.

   It consists, apart from this main provision

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 cipale, in certain other provisions, which are preferably used at the same time and which will be discussed more explicitly below.

    @
It relates more particularly to certain draping modes, as well as certain embodiments, of said arrangements; and it relates more particularly still, and this 0: title of new industrial products, to the organs of the type in question comprising application of the said provisions, the special elements specific to their establishment, as well as the assemblies, in particular the explosion engines, comprising such components and installations, fixed or mobile, comprising such assemblies.

   And it can, in any case, be well understood with the aid of the additional description which follows, which is of course given only as an indication.

   According to the invention, and more particularly according to one of its modes of application as well as according to those of the embodiments of its various parts, to which it seems that preference should be given. , proposing to establish a connecting rod for an internal combustion engine, the procedure is as follows, or similarly.

   Said big end is arranged in such a way that at least part of the surface which is to be in frictional contact with the crankshaft sleeve is made of a vitrified material, for example glass or the like, which is why, preferably, it is establishes in vitrified material two half-bearings more or less similar to the metal half-bearings currently used but, advantageously, of greater thickness, for example 10 mm thick for a crankpin diameter of 70 mm, and the connecting rod body and its cap are arranged in such a way that they can grip without play and with as regular a distribution of the seat as possible the two suspensions.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 said half-bearings, any excessive tightening being, of course,

   to be avoided because it would cause in the parts in vitrified material of the internal stresses favoring the rupture.

   Advantageously, the half-cushions are made to include stiffening flanges more or less similar to those included by certain metal half-cushions so that more or less radial channels, or even spider legs, although in most cases. case, these spider legs are uninteresting.

   As vitrified material for the establishment of the half-shells, either, and preferably, one. glass, for example to a special glass such as crystal or to a glass resistant to heat, or to any other vitrified material such as porcelain, quartz, etc.

   The vitrified material is preferably chosen which is adopted in such a way that its coefficient of expansion is close to that of the crank pin, or even identical to the latter, which will be easy for any person skilled in the art to do. .

   Finally, also preferably, the procedure, in order to produce the half-bearings, is by molding a block of dimensions slightly greater than the final dimensions and then machining to the exact dimensions, for example by grinding and polishing, so to obtain for the friction surfaces, a polish as large as possible and, for the bearing surfaces on the connecting rod body and on the cap, a regular bearing at least on large surfaces distributed over the periphery .

   The clearance to be provided between the half-cousbinets and the crankpin will be that strictly necessary for lubrication if the equality of the expansion coefficients of the materials constituting the aforesaid components has been observed.

   Advantageously also recourse is had, in conjunction with bearings made of vitrified material, to a crankshaft pin of as hard as possible, for example a

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 crankpin in nitrided steel as known.

   As goes without saying, and as moreover already emerges from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to that of its modes of application, nor to those of the embodiments of its various parts having more particularly been considered; on the contrary, it embraces all the variants thereof, in particular those in which the invention would be applied to all bearings other than big ends.
