Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A sofa-bed including a base frame, a seat portion and a back-rest portion and characterized by a relatively sturdy and simple construction resulting from the seat portion being rigidly fixed to the base frame and the back-rest portion being solely pivoted directly to the base frame. The base frame includes laterally opposite longer side bars and an intermediate bar between the longer side bars, the seat portion is rigidly secured to one longer side bar and to the intermediate bar, and the back-rest portion is pivoted to the base frame by a simple hinge system on the opposite side of the intermediates bar relative to the seat portion.

Claims (6)
1- A sofa-bed comprising a base, a seat portion, a back-rest portion, the base including a rectangular frame having laterally opposite longer side bars, and an intermediate bar extending in laterally spaced-apart relationship relative to said longer side bars and fixed between the latter, said seat portion being rigidly fixed to one of said side bars and to said intermediate bar, and hinge means pivotally connecting said back-rest portion to said base for pivotal movement thereof about an axis extending adjacent to and along said intermediate bar for pivotal displacement of the back-rest portion between an upright sofa configuration position and a lowered bed configuration position upon resting of said back-rest position on said other longer side bar.
2- A sofa-bed as defined in claim 1, wherein said inter-mediate bar is closer to said other longer side bar than to said one longer side bar, and said back-rest portion overlies at least a portion of said frame on the opposite side of said intermediate bar relative to said seat portion.
3- A sofa-bed as defined in claim 1, wherein each of said bars defines an upper edge longitudinally extending lengthwise thereof, the upper edges of said one longer side bar and of said inter-mediate bar are operatively level with respect to each other, said back-rest portion includes a rectangular box of predetermined thickness defining an upper edge laterally adjacent and proximate to the seat portion, and the upper edge of the other longer side bar is lower than the upper edge of the intermediate bar by substantially the thickness of said rectangular box.
4- A sofa-bed as defined in claim 1, wherein said hinge means includes a pair of hinges at the opposite ends respectively of the back-rest portion, each hinge includes a pair of plates rigidly secured to said back-rest portion and to said frame respectively, a latch member pivoted to one of said plates, and a projection on the other of said plates releasably engageable by said latch member to releasably hold the back-rest portion in the upright sofa configuration position.
5- A sofa-bed as defined in claim 4, wherein said inter-mediate bar is closer to said other longer side bar than to said one longer side bar, said back-rest portion overlies at least a portion of said frame on the opposite side of said intermediate bar relative to said seat portion, each of said bars defines an upper edge longi-tudinally extending lengthwise thereof, the upper edges of said one longer side bar and of said intermediate bar are operatively level with respect to each other, said back-rest portion includes a rectangular box of predetermined thickness defining an upper edge laterally adjacent and proximate to the seat portion, the upper edge of the other longer side bar is lower than the upper edge of the intermediate bar by substantially the thickness of said rectangular box, and the latter is pivoted at said upper edge thereof proximate to the seat portion.
6- A sofa-bed as defined in claim 5, wherein said frame includes a pair of laterally opposite shorter side bars extending transversely to said longer side bars and rigidly secured thereto at opposite ends, said intermediate bar and said longer and shorter side bars are made each of a wood board standing upwardly edgewise, cross-bars interconnect said longer side bars and carry said intermediate bar, said plates upwardly extend edgewise, said latch member constitutes a hook pivoted on one side of the corresponding hinge plates, and said projection laterally projects from the corresponding other plate on said one side of the corresponding hinge plates.
