Description
Carbide acetylene is cleaned using cleaning compounds through which the gas flows on its way from the developer to the burner. These masses consist essentially of chlorinated lime. However, chlorinated lime alone cannot be used as a cleaning compound because it heats up considerably when the gas passes through and has often given rise to explosions. The cleaning compounds are therefore mixtures of various substances with chlorinated lime as the main component. Their effect is essentially to oxidize the impurities in the acetylene, in particular to add them to less disturbing products and to remove them. But their use is not without risk either, especially if a hot, moist gas has to be cleaned, as is supplied by all known apparatuses during prolonged operation. The usual cleaning compounds also get very hot and there is always a risk of explosion. The preparation of the cleaning compositions is also very laborious and their usability is relatively short, so that these expensive cleaning agents also have to be renewed frequently.
Im unmittelbaren Anschluß an die Entwicklung des Acetylens ausThese disadvantages are overcome by the invention. This is because it has been found that active charcoal is eminently suitable for the purification of carbide acetylene. Immediately after the development of acetylene
Carbide, the gas can be freed of all harmful and unpleasant impurities by simply passing it through active carbon at room temperature. The active charcoal is best used in a fine-grain form.
The new cleaning agent t is easy to use, it cleans excellently, has an unlimited shelf life and is effective, its cleaning power is almost inexhaustible and easy to regenerate. It does not heat up during use, even if a moist gas is passed through, so that any risk of explosion is excluded. As a result of its insensitivity to water, it can also be arranged in the gas collector itself or on the way between the collector and the point of consumption. It is preferably fitted as a filling for a removable insert in the collector, this insert being best for the gas to flow through when the gas is withdrawn.
In acetylene technology, however, it is already known that the hydrogen phosphide present as an impurity in the acetylene can be removed by treatment with oxidizing agents. A related method is that acetylene is passed together with air or oxygen expediently at a higher temperature (mentioned: 80-100 °) through a tower with a strongly adsorbing tower, whereby volatile acids can also be present. The invention is clearly distinguished from this, however, in that this known process is carried out in the presence of oxygen and with heating, specifically for the sole purpose of removing hydrogen phosphide. At that time it was by no means recognized that it was possible to simply pass acetylene through active charcoal in the absence of oxygen and without heating. to obtain adequate acetylene purification for all technical needs. The implementation of the older procedure therefore in no way collides with the present property right.
Finally, the acetyl-containing gases obtained by treating hydrocarbons in an electric arc have already been passed over active charcoal in order to convert them to acetylene conversion products, e.g. B. for the production of acetic acid acetaldehyde, to be freed from highly unsaturated additions. Such an acetylene-containing gas mixture obtainable thermally or electrically is, however, largely different from carbide acetylene. In the case of carbide decomposition, a gas consisting only of acetylene, apart from minor impurities, is obtained, while the first-mentioned gas mixture contains only about 15% acetylene. The other components of this mixture are substances which are completely different from the impurities in the carbide acetylene. In particular, the known process involves the removal of diacetylene. The fact that active charcoal is suitable for their removal did not give the slightest indication that active charcoal would also be suitable as a cleaning compound for carbide acetylene because of its completely different impurities.
