Description
An Fahrzeugen, z.B. On vehicles, e.g. automobiles, so-called indicators have been provided to indicate the direction of travel. It has now been found that these show malfunctions in operation. For this reason, it has been proposed to replace the direction indicators with lamps fixedly attached to the sides of the vehicle, which flash in a short steady rhythm to indicate the direction of travel by periodically supplying them with current pulses. The invention now relates to a simple, robust device that generates the current pulses for the flashing lamps.
Flash pulse generators are already known that work according to a thermoelectric principle, in that a bimetal strip heats up electrically, switches off its heating when it is heated and thus bent, and thereby bends back again and in this way constantly opens and closes a contact. With such a device, however, due to the thermal inertia, only relatively low flashing frequencies can be generated and, in addition, difficulties often arise at the control contacts as a result of the contact pressures that are necessarily low at high flashing frequencies. There are also flasher switches for vehicles known, which consist of a small electric motor that operates a breaker contact. This arrangement has the disadvantage that it is complicated and expensive; because to manufacture the motor and the interrupter, a relatively considerable amount of work and material is necessary.
The flasher relay described below avoids these disadvantages by using a self-controlling, oscillating spring-mass system, for example in the manner of the unrest of a clock, to generate the current pulses. Such an arrangement is cheap, meets the requirements for robustness in vehicle operation, gives an absolutely constant flashing rhythm and, thanks to the high contact pressure on the interrupter contact, ensures safe operation even with high currents.
The invention is shown for example in the figure. This shows a plan view of the flasher relay, with the protective cap removed. Specifically, 1 denotes a base plate made of an electrically insulating material, 2 a rotatably mounted flywheel which, together with the spiral spring 3, which is attached to the flywheel shaft on the one hand and to the base plate on the other, forms a system that executes torsional vibrations. A contact pin 4 made of suitable contact material such as silver, tungsten or a similar material is riveted into the flywheel near the pivot point. 5 shows the coil of an electromagnet 6 with the armature 8 mounted in the pivot point 7. A soft contact spring 9 with a contact pad 10 and a rigid bracket 11 with the contact rivet 12 are fastened to the armature 8, electrically insulated therefrom. The bracket 11 is angled at its end in a U-shape; the contact spring 9 rests against the free leg of this U-shaped bend with a certain bias. In the idle state, the contact 12 on the bracket 11 is pressed against the contact screw 14 by the spring 13 acting on the armature 8, while the armature 8 is not in contact with the electromagnet 6. The spiral spring 3 is in turn installed in such a way that, in the rest position, the contact pin 4 attached to the flywheel 2 rests against the contact 10 with a slight pressure. 15, 16 and 17 finally represent 3 terminals. The terminal 15 leads to the left pole of the power source 18 and at the same time to the flasher lamps 19, 20, and inside the flasher relay to the coil 5, from there via the spiral spring 3 to the one attached to the flywheel Contact pin 4. The terminal 16 is connected on the one hand to the contact spring 9 via a freely movable supply line 9a and via this to the bracket 11 and on the other hand to the switching arm of the switch 21a. This has 3 switch positions, the middle one being a simple mechanical detent position without current conduction. The switch 21a is mechanically coupled to a similar switch 21b. It is further provided that in this switch combination, for example housed in the switch knob, an incandescent lamp 22 is installed, which is connected to the terminal 15 and the switch arm of the switch 21b. This light bulb serves as a control and always flashes when the flasher relay is working. It thus gives the driver a control option in cases when the actual flashing lights are not visible to him on the car. The left contact of the switch 21b conducts the current to the left turn signal lamp 19 and the right contact to the right turn signal lamp 20.
The two contacts of switch 21a are connected to one another and lead to the right pole of power source 18. Terminal 17 is connected on the one hand to contact screw 14 and on the other hand to the contact arm of switch 21b.
The mode of operation of the invention will now be explained below. In the normal position, the switches 21a and 21b are in their middle position, the power source 18 is switched off by the switch 21a and the flasher relay and the lamps do not receive any power. If, for example, the left lamp is now to start flashing, the combined switch 21a and 21b is switched to the left. As a result, the coil 5 of the electromagnet receives power via the following circuit: right pole of the power source 18, switch 21a, terminal 16, contact 10 and 4, spiral spring 3, coil 5, terminal 15, left pole of the power source 18. The armature 8 is now attracted against the force of the spring 13. As a result, the contact spring 9 is tensioned and gives the flywheel a shock. As a result of the inertia of the flywheel, it rotates so far that the contact pin 4 lifts off the contact pad 10, which is located on the contact spring 9. This means that the current to the coil is interrupted and the spring 13 pulls the armature away from the coil again. After some time, when the kinetic energy of the flywheel has accumulated in the spiral spring 3, the flywheel first comes to a standstill, then reverses its movement and rotates back at an accelerated rate as a result of the force of the tensioned spiral spring 3. As soon as the contacts 4 and 10 touch each other again, the coil 5 receives power again, the armature is tightened again and the game begins again. In the period of time in which the coil is de-energized and the contact rivet 12 rests against the contact screw 14, the left lamp 19 receives power via the following circuit: left pole of the power source 18, lamp 19, switch 21b, terminal 17, contact screw 14, Contact rivet 12, bracket 11, contact spring 9, supply line 9a, terminal 16 switch 21a, right pole of the power source. During the period in which the armature is attracted, this circuit is interrupted at the contact points 12 and 14. The lamp 19 thus keeps current pulses in the rhythm of the oscillations.
If the right lamp 20 is to flash instead of the left lamp 19, the switches 21a and 21b are switched to the right. This only changes the situation to the extent that the flashing pulses are now not fed to the lamp 19 but rather to the lamp 20. The lamp 22 also flashes in both cases and shows the driver that the flasher relay is working.
With a fixed moment of inertia of the centrifugal mass, the frequency of the flashing pulses is essentially determined by the spring constants of the spiral spring 3 and the contact spring 9. The relationship between the closing and opening times of the contact points 12 and 14 that interrupt the lamp current depends on the ratio of the spring constants between the spiral spring 3 and the contact spring 9 and the bias with which the spiral spring 3 presses the contact pin 4 against the contact pad 10, as well as the size of the bias with which the contact spring 9 lays against the angled end of the bracket 11 and the size of the armature stroke. The smaller the spring constant of the contact spring 9 is compared to the spring constant of the spiral spring 3 and the smaller the bias of the contact spring 9 and the larger the armature stroke, the longer the contact points 12 and 14 are closed. It is therefore possible to give the flashing frequency and the ratio of dark to light time a certain value by appropriately dimensioning and adjusting the components. It is also possible to have several pairs of contacts actuated by the armature of the electromagnet. It goes without saying that this flasher relay can be used not only for vehicles, but also in all other cases where it is important to periodically open and close a circuit.
