Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a vacuum cleaner and a power indicator for determining a threshold value of the suction power of the device. Furthermore the invention relates to a method for determining a threshold value of the suction power of a vacuum cleaner.
  • the suction power of a vacuum cleaner is determined by the under pressure and the airflow that are created.
  • snapping for the snap spring is determined by the amount of suction power that is generated in the passage.
  • the snap spring will only snap to another position when sufficient suction power is generated. It is rather straightforward to design the snap spring such that it only snaps above a predetermined level of suction power in the passage. This can be obtained for example by adapting the thickness of the disc or the diameter of the hole. Snapping of the snap spring typically is accompanied by a clicking sound. This sound then indicates to a user if a threshold value of the suction power is obtained or not. Alternatively one can check visually if the snap spring has snapped, for example by providing a transparent part in a wall of the passage. A further possibility is to remove the snap spring from the passage and check its present position.
  • the vacuum cleaner further comprises a tube assembly and a housing, the tube assembly connecting the suction nozzle with the housing, the power indicator being provided within the tube assembly.
  • the tube assembly comprises at least two parts that are releasable connected at an end of each part, and wherein the power indicator is adapted to fit at one of the ends.
  • the snap spring has a substantially circular shape, comprises a central hole, and snaps over-center.
  • a power indicator for use in a vacuum cleaner is provided.
  • the present invention furthermore also relates to a method for determining a threshold value of the suction power of a vacuum cleaner is provided according to claim 11.
  • Fig. 2 is a cross-section of a power indicator provided in a suction passage.
  • Figure 2 shows a power indicator 1 that is accommodated in a suction passage 4 of a vacuum cleaner.
  • the power indicator 1 comprises a snap spring 2 that is provided with a central hole 3.
  • the snap spring 2 is a metal disk that has a substantially circular shape.
  • the suction passage 4 preferably has a cylindrical shape.
  • the vacuum cleaner is provided with an aggregate that generates suction power resulting in a flow of air through the passage. Typically the air is sucked by a suction nozzle from a surface to be cleaned while dirt particles on such surface are entrained in the air flow.
  • the suction power in the passage is determined by the amount of under pressure and airflow that are created in the passage.
  • the force that acts on the disc arises due to the under pressure on the one hand and the air flow on the other hand. Accordingly the effective force which acts on the disc will be determined by the amount of suction power that is generated in the passage. Only when this effective force and thus the suction power also exceeds a certain threshold value the snap spring 2 snaps and changes to a position wherein, as seen in Fig. 2 , it bulges upwardly.
  • the first force component results in a static force which is indicated by the short arrows in Fig. 2 .
  • the other force component is a dynamic force which is indicated by the large arrows in Fig. 2 .
  • the dynamic force component mainly acts on the area directly adjacent to the central hole 3.
  • the snap spring snaps over-centre.
  • the level of this threshold value is determined by the characteristics of the snap spring such as material selection, thickness and shape of the disc and diameter of the central hole. By adapting these characteristics one can adapt the threshold value. If the threshold value is not reached the snap spring will not snap indicating that insufficient suction power is obtained.
  • the power indicator is in particular suited for a quick determination of the suction power.
  • Typical vacuum cleaners have a tube assembly which has two parts. One part is connected to a housing accommodating the aggregate and for example a dust handling system and the other part is connected to a suction nozzle. At a free end both parts are adapted to be connected and released from one and other manually. It is advantageous to accommodate the power indicator in an end of the part that is connected to the housing. In this manner the power indicator is easily (un)installed allowing operating the vacuum cleaner without the indicator also. In Fig. 2 the power indicator is provided in the vicinity of a free end 4. However it is also possible for example to accommodate the power indicator close to the suction nozzle.
  • the power indicator 1 in Fig. 2 comprises a sealing member 5 that surrounds the periphery of the disc shaped snap spring for tightly fitting the power indicator in the passage. This allows that substantially all air flows through the central hole and thus maximizing the force F.
  • the sealing member is made from a flexible material such as rubber.
  • the vacuum cleaner further comprises a mechanism (not shown) that is arranged to snap the spring by operating the mechanism, wherein the snapping action is reverse to the snapping action when the suction power in the passage exceeds a threshold value.
  • a mechanism not shown
  • the snapping action is reverse to the snapping action when the suction power in the passage exceeds a threshold value.
