Abstract
Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Carbonsäureestern, umfassend die Umsetzung wenigstens eines primären Monoalkohols oder eines Gemischs aus einem primären Monoalkohol und wenigstens einem davon verschiedenen Alkoholin Gegenwart eines Übergangsmetallcarbenkomplexkatalysators (K), welcher als Zentralatom (M) mindestensein Übergangsmetallatomder Gruppe 8, 9 oder 10 des Periodensystems (IUPAC) und mindestens einen einzähnigen N-heterocyclischen Carbenliganden aufweist, in Gegenwart einer Base, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass man den Katalysator (K) durch Umsetzung einer Übergangsmetallverbindung (V), die mindestens ein Übergangsmetallatomder Gruppe 8, 9 oder 10 des Periodensystems (IUPAC),aber keinen Carbenliganden aufweist, mit einem Imidazoliumsalzin Gegenwart des primären Monoalkohols und der Baseherstellt, wobei man die Umsetzung in Substanz durchführt.

HERSTELLUNG VON|CARBONSÄUREESTERN AUS ALKOHOLEN UNTER
DEHYDRIERUNG
Beschreibung: Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Carbonsäureestern durch Umsetzung wenigstens eines primären Monoalkohols oder eines Gemischs aus einem primären Monoalkohol und wenigstens einem davon verschiedenen Alkohol in Gegenwart eines Übergangsmetallcarbenkomplexkatalysators K. Carbonsäureester sind wichtige chemische Verbindungen, welche beispielsweise als Lösungsmittel, Weichmacher sowie Duft- und Aromastoffe eingesetzt werden. Es gibt verschiedene Methoden zu ihrer Herstellung, wobei die Umsetzung einer Carbonsäure mit einem Alkohol die gebräuchlichste ist: RaCOOH + HORb RaCOORb + H20
Da es sich hierbei um eine Gleichgewichtsreaktion handelt, welche meist säurekatalysiert wird, muss das Wasser oder der Carbonsäureester aus dem Reaktionsgemisch entfernt werden, um hohe Umsätze zu erzielen. Gerade bei niedrigsiedenden Carbon- säuren und niedrigsiedenden Alkoholen bilden sich hierbei oft unerwünschte Azeotrope, welche die Trennung erschweren.
Ein anderer Weg zur Herstellung von Carbonsäureestern ist die Umsetzung eines Säureanhydrids mit einem Alkohol:
RaCOOCORa + HORb RaCOORb + RaCOOH
Hierbei wird ein Äquivalent der Carbonsäure gebildet, welche ebenfalls abgetrennt werden muss. Auch hier bilden sich oft Azeotrope, zudem werden zwei Äquivalente der Carbonsäure für ein Äquivalent des Carbonsäureesters benötigt.
Ein weiterer Weg zur Herstellung von Carbonsäureestern ist die Übergangsmetallkom- plex-katalysierte Umsetzung von Alkoholen unter Dehydrierung, im Folgenden als direkte Esterbildung bezeichnet. Hierbei werden als Edukte nur Alkohole eingesetzt, wo- bei mindestens einer der beiden Reaktanten eine primäre OH-Gruppe, d. h. eine CH20H-Gruppe, aufweisen muss:
RaCH2OH + R OH RaCOOR + 2 H2
Bei dieser Art der Carbonsäureestersynthese muss keine Carbonsäure eingesetzt werden, was von Vorteil ist, da vor allem die niederen Carbonsäuren einen unangenehmen Geruch aufweisen. Zudem entsteht kein Wasser bei der Reaktion, was die destillative Aufarbeitung des Reaktionsgemisches vereinfacht. Dadurch, dass die Re- aktionsbedingungen recht mild gehalten werden können, entstehen außerdem nur wenige Nebenprodukte.
Die Umsetzung von primären Alkoholen zu Carbonsäureestern unter Katalyse mit Übergangsmetallkomplexen ist in der Literatur mehrfach beschrieben.
Tetrahedron Lett. 1981 , 22, 5327-5330 und J. Org. Chem. 1987, 52, 4319-4327 beschreiben die Verwendung von Ruthenium-Komplexen mit Phosphanliganden als Katalysatoren zur Herstellung von Carbonsäureestern und Lactonen aus primären Alkoholen.
J. Organomet. Chem. 1985, 282, C7-C10 beschreibt Katalysatoren zur Herstellung von Carbonsäureestern aus primären Alkoholen unter Verwendung eines Rutheniumkomplexes mit Tetraphenylcyclopentadienon-Ligand. Chem. Rev. 2010, 1 10, 681 -703 beschreibt verschiedene Übergangsmetallkomplexka- talysatoren zur direkten Esterbildung aus primären Alkoholen.
Organometallics 201 1 , 30, 2180-2188, Organometallics 201 1 , 30, 5716-5724 und J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2005, 127, 10840-10841 beschreiben Ruthenium-Pinzettenkomplexe zur Katalyse der direkten Veresterung von primären Alkoholen.
M. Nielsen et al., Angew. Chem. 2012, 124 beschreibt Ruthenium- und Iridium- Komplexkatalysatoren mit mehrzähnigen Stickstoff- und Phosphor-organischen Liganden zur Synthese von Essigsäureethylester aus Ethanol.
Organometallics 201 1 , 30, 6044-6048 beschreibt Rutheniumkomplexverbindungen auf Basis N-heterocyclischer Carbene als Katalysatoren bei der direkten Esterbildung aus primären Alkoholen. Dem Rutheniumkomplex wird vorteilhafterweise ein Phosphan zugesetzt.
Nachteilig an den beschriebenen Methoden zur Darstellung von Carbonsäureestern ist, dass die verwendeten Übergangsmetallkomplexkatalysatoren durch aufwendige Synthesen hergestellt und gegebenenfalls isoliert werden müssen. Zudem werden häufig oxidationsempfindliche und teure Phosphanliganden eingesetzt, was eine aufwendige
Reaktionsführung unter Inertbedingungen notwendig macht. Weiterhin wird überwiegend in größeren Mengen eines zugesetzten Lösungsmittels gearbeitet, wodurch das Reaktionsgemisch aufwendig aufgearbeitet werden muss und sich die Raumzeitausbeute verringert.
Der vorliegenden Erfindung liegt die Aufgabe zugrunde, ein Verfahren für die über- gangsmetallkomplexkatalysierte direkte Esterbildung aus primären Monoalkoholen oder aus Gemischen aus einem primären Monoalkohol und wenigstens einem davon verschiedenen Alkohol bereitzustellen.
Es wurde nun überraschenderweise gefunden, dass diese Aufgabe gelöst wird durch ein Verfahren, bei dem man einen primären Monoalkohol oder ein Gemisch aus einem primären Monoalkohol und wenigstens einem davon verschiedenen Alkohol in Gegenwart einer Base und wenigstens eines im Folgenden näher definierten Übergangsme- tallcarbenkomplexkatalysators K eines Übergangsmetallatoms der Gruppe 8, 9 oder 10 des Periodensystems (IUPAC) in Substanz umsetzt, wobei man den Katalysator K durch Umsetzung einer geeigneten, nicht-carbenoiden Übergangsmetallverbindung V mit einem Imidazoliumsalz in Gegenwart des primären Monoalkohols und der Base herstellt.
Dementsprechend betrifft die vorliegende Erfindung ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Carbonsäureestern, umfassend die Umsetzung wenigstens eines primären Monoalkohols oder eines Gemischs aus einem primären Monoalkohol und wenigstens einem davon verschiedenen Alkohol in Gegenwart eines Übergangsmetallcarbenkomplexka- talysators K, welcher als Zentralatom M mindestens ein Übergangsmetallatom der
Gruppe 8, 9 oder 10 des Periodensystems (IUPAC) und mindestens einen einzähnigen N-heterocyclischen Carbenliganden aufweist, in Gegenwart einer Base, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass man den Katalysator K durch Umsetzung einer Übergangsmetallverbindung V, die mindestens ein Übergangsmetallatom der Gruppe 8, 9 oder 10 des Periodensystems (IUPAC), aber keinen Carbenliganden aufweist, mit einem Imidazoliumsalz in Gegenwart des primären Monoalkohols und der Base herstellt, wobei man die Umsetzung in Substanz durchführt.
Vorteile des erfindungsgemäßen Verfahrens sind vor allem die milden Reaktionsbedin- gungen, die geringe Bildung von Nebenprodukten bei gleichzeitig hoher Raumzeitausbeute. Zudem kann auf diese Weise vermieden werden, dass das Katalysatorsystem separat hergestellt werden muss. Weiterer Vorteil ist die vereinfachte Aufarbeitung des Reaktionsgemisches, da aufgrund der Reaktionsführung in Substanz kein Lösungsmittel abgetrennt werden muss. Zudem erlaubt die geringe Oxidationsempfindlichkeit des
Katalysatorsystems eine Reaktionsführung auch unter nicht inerten Bedingungen. Außerdem wird durch das Verfahren der Einsatz niederer Carbonsäuren vermieden, die einen unangenehmen Geruch aufweisen. Im erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren wird mindestens ein Katalysator K, der mindestens ein Übergangsmetallatom der Gruppe 8, 9 oder 10 des Periodensystems (IUPAC) enthält, eingesetzt. Zu den Übergangsmetallen der Gruppe 8, 9 und 10 des Periodensystems (IUPAC) zählen vor allem Eisen, Cobalt, Nickel, Ruthenium, Rhodium, Palladium, Osmium, Iridium und Platin. Bevorzugt sind Katalysatoren K, die mindestens ein Über- gangsmetallatom, das ausgewählt ist unter Ruthenium und Iridium, enthalten. Besonders bevorzugtes Übergangsmetall ist Ruthenium.
Der Katalysator K weist mindestens einen, z. B. 1 , 2, 3 oder 4, N-heterocyclischen Carbenliganden auf. Geeignete N-heterocyclische Carbenliganden sind vor allem Imidazol-Liganden, worin der Kohlenstoff in 2-Position das carbenoide Donoratom ist. Hierzu zählen insbesondere solche der Formel (I),

R1 und R4 unabhängig voneinander für Ci-Cio-Alkyl, C3-Cio-Cycloalkyl, 5- bis 10 gliedriges Heteroaryl, das 1 , 2 oder 3 unter O, N und S ausgewählte Heteroatome als Ringlieder aufweist, oder Aryl stehen, wobei die vier letztgenannten Substituenten unsubstituiert sind oder mit einem oder mehreren Substituenten, ausgewählt unter Halogen, Ci-Cio-Alkoxy, CN, Ci-Cio-Alkyl, C3-Cio-Cycloalkyl, Phenyl und Naphthyl, substituiert sein können;
R2 und R3 unabhängig voneinander für Wasserstoff stehen oder eine der für R1 bzw. R4 genannten Bedeutungen aufweisen.
Hier und im Folgenden gibt das zur Definition von Substituenten verwendete Präfix "Cp- Cq-" die Anzahl möglicher C-Atome des Substituenten an.
Werden keine anderen Angaben gemacht, so gelten im Rahmen der vorliegenden Erfindung für die im Zusammenhang mit den Substituenten verwendeten Begriffe die folgenden allgemeinen Definitionen: "Ci-Cio-Alkyl" steht für einen linearen oder verzweigten Alkylrest mit 1 bis 10 Kohlenstoffatomen. Beispiele für Ci-Cio-Alkyl sind Methyl, Ethyl, n-Propyl, iso-Propyl, n-Butyl, 2-Butyl, iso-Butyl, tert.-Butyl (2-Methylpropan-2-yl), n-Pentyl (Amyl), 1 -Methylbutyl, 2- Methylbutyl, 3-Methylbutyl, 1 ,1 -Dimethylpropyl, 1 ,2-Dimethylpropyl, 2,2-Dimethylpropyl, 1 -Ethylpropyl, n-Hexyl, 1 -Methylpentyl, 2-Methylpentyl, 3-Methylpentyl, 4-Methylpentyl, 1 ,1 -Dimethylbutyl, 1 ,2-Dimethylbutyl, 1 ,3-Dimethylbutyl, 2,2-Dimethylbutyl, 2,3- Dimethylbutyl, 3,3-Dimethylbutyl, 1 -Ethylbutyl, 2-Ethylbutyl, 1 ,1 ,2-Trimethylpropyl, 1 ,2,2-Trimethylpropyl, 1 -Ethyl-1 -methylpropyl, 1 -Ethyl-2-methylpropyl, Heptyl, Octyl, 2- Ethylhexyl, Nonyl, Decyl und deren Konstitutionsisomere. "Aryl" steht für einen aromatischen Kohlenwasserstoffrest, der substituiert oder unsub- stituiert sein kann. Beispiele für unsubstituiertes Aryl sind Phenyl, 1 -Naphthyl, 2- Naphthyl und 9-Anthryl. Beispiele für Aryl, das mit ein oder mehreren C1-C10- Alkylresten, wie oben definiert, substituiert sein kann, sind 2,6-Di(isopropyl)phenyl, o- Tolyl, m-Tolyl, p-Tolyl und Mesityl. "Ci-Cio-Alkoxy" steht für eine über ein Sauerstoffatom gebundene Alkylgruppe mit 1 bis 10 Kohlenstoffatomen. Beispiele sind Methoxy, Ethoxy, n-Propoxy, 1 -Methylethoxy (Isopropoxy), n-Butoxy, 1 -Methylpropoxy (sec.-Butoxy), 2-Methylpropoxy (Isobutoxy), 1 ,1 -Dimethylethoxy (tert.-Butoxy), n-Pentoxy, 1 -Methylbutoxy, 2-Methylbutoxy, 3- Methylbutoxy, 1 ,1 -Dimethylpropoxy, 1 ,2-Dimethylpropoxy, 2,2-Dimethylpropoxy, 1 - Ethylpropoxy, 2-Ethylpropoxy, n-Hexoxy, 1 -Methylpentoxy, 2-Methylpentoxy, 3-

"Aliphatische Olefine" sind lineare oder verzweigte, einfach oder mehrfach ungesättigte Kohlenwasserstoffe mit im Allgemeinen 2 bis 10 Kohlenstoffatomen. Beispiele sind Ethen, Propen, 1 -Buten, 2-Buten, 1 ,3-Butadien und 2-Methyl-prop-1 -en.
"Cycloolefine" sind cyclische, einfach oder mehrfach ungesättigte Kohlenwasserstoffe mit im Allgemeinen 4 bis 10 Kohlenstoffatomen. Beispiele sind Cyclobuten, Cyclopen- ten, Cyclohexen und 1 ,5-Cyclooctadien.
"Carbocyclische Aromaten" sind unsubstituierte oder ein- oder mehrfach mit Alkylres- ten substituierte aromatische Verbindungen mit im Allgemeinen 6 bis 10 Kohlenstoffatomen. Beispiele sind Benzol, Naphthalin und p-Cymol.
"Heteroaromaten" sind unsubstituierte oder substituierte aromatische Verbindungen mit im Allgemeinen 5 bis 10 Ringatomen, die mindestens ein Heteroatom, das ausgewählt ist unter O, N und S, aufweisen. Beispiele sind Furan, Pyrrol, Thiophen, Imidazol, Py- razol, Oxazol, Isoxazol und Thiazol.
"Aldehyde" sind lineare oder verzweigte Aldehyde, die im Allgemeinen 1 bis 10 Kohlenstoffatome aufweisen. Beispiele sind Formaldehyd, Acetaldehyd und Propionalde- hyd. "Ketone" sind lineare oder verzweigte Ketone, die im Allgemeinen 3 bis 10 Kohlenstoffatome aufweisen. Beispiele sind Aceton, Butanon, 2-Pentanon und 3-Pentanon.
"Ci-Cio-Carboxylat" sind Anionen gesättigter oder ungesättigter Carbonsäuren mit 1 bis 10, insbesondere 1 bis 4 Kohlenstoffatomen. Beispiele für Ci-Cio-Carboxylat sind For- miat, Acetat, Acrylat, Methacrylat und Propionat.
"Ci-Cio-Alkoxid" sind Reste linearer oder verzweigter Alkohole mit 1 bis 10, insbesondere 1 bis 4 Kohlenstoffatomen. Beispiele sind Methoxid, Ethoxid, Propoxid, n-Butylat, 2-Butylat und tert.-Butylat.
In Formel (I) haben die Variablen R1, R2, R3 und R4 unabhängig voneinander und insbesondere in Kombination die folgenden Bedeutungen:
In Formel (I) stehen R1 und R4 unabhängig voneinander vorzugsweise für einen unter Ci-Cio-Alkyl, C3-Cio-Cycloalkyl, Benzyl und Phenyl ausgewählten Rest, wobei der Phenylring in den beiden letztgenannten Resten unsubstituiert ist oder ein- oder mehrfach, z. B. 1 -, 2- oder 3-fach, mit Ci-C3-Alkyl substituiert ist. Insbesondere stehen R1 und R4 für Ci-Cio-Alkyl, speziell für Ci-C6-Alkyl.
In Formel (I) stehen R2 und R3 unabhängig voneinander vorzugsweise für einen unter Wasserstoff, Ci-Cio-Alkyl, C3-Cio-Cycloalkyl, Benzyl und Phenyl ausgewählten Rest, wobei der Phenylring in den beiden letztgenannten Gruppen unsubstituiert ist oder ein- oder mehrfach, z. B. 1 -, 2- oder 3-fach, mit Ci-C3-Alkyl substituiert ist. Insbesondere stehen R2 und R3 für Wasserstoff oder Ci-Cio-Alkyl, speziell für Wasserstoff oder Ci- C6-Alkyl und ganz speziell für Wasserstoff.
Der Katalysator K kann neben mindestens einem einzähnigen N-heterocyclischen Car- benliganden mindestens einen weiteren Liganden L aufweisen. Liganden L sind bevorzugt ausgewählt unter CO, Hydrid, aliphatischen Olefinen, Cycloolefinen, carbocycli- schen Aromaten, insbesondere Benzol, Naphthalin und p-Cymol, Heteroaromaten, insbesondere Furan, Pyrrol, Imidazol und Pyrazol, Aldehyden, insbesondere Formaldehyd, Acetaldehyd und Propionaldehyd, Ketonen, insbesondere Aceton, Butanon, 2- Pentanon und 3-Pentanon, Halogeniden, Ci-Cio-Carboxylat, Methylsulfonat, Methylsulfat, Trifluormethylsulfat, Tosylat, Mesylat, Cyanid, Isocyanat, Cyanat, Thiocyanat, Hydroxid, Ci-Cio-Alkoxid, Cyclopentadienid, Pentamethylcyclopentadienid und Pen- tabenzylcyclopentadienid. Insbesondere bevorzugte Liganden L sind p-Cymol, Chlorid, CO, Hydrid, Ci-Cio-Alkoxid und Ci-Cio-Carboxylat.
Imidazoliumsalze, die in dem erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren eingesetzt werden können, sind vor allem Imidazoliumsalze der allgemeinen Formel (II)

In besonders bevorzugten Imidazoliumsalzen der Formel (II) haben die Variablen X-, A, R1, R2, R3 und R4 unabhängig voneinander und insbesondere in Kombination die folgenden Bedeutungen:
X- steht vorzugsweise für Chlorid, Tosylat, Methansulfonat, Trifluormethansulfonat, Mesylat, Tetrafluoroborat, Hexafluorophosphat, Hexafluoroantimonat, Ci-Cio-Carboxy- lat, Sulfat oder Methylsulfat, insbesondere für Chlorid, Methansulfonat oder C1-C10- Carboxylat.

N-heterocyclische Carbene haben ähnliche Ligandeneigenschaften wie Trialkyl- oder Triarylphosphane, allerdings haben N-heterocyclische Carbene gegenüber Phospha- nen den Vorteil, dass sie nicht oxidationsempfindlich sind. Auf 1 ,3-substituierten Imida- zolen basierte N-heterocyclische Carbene sind synthetisch sehr leicht zugänglich, siehe beispielweise W. A. Herrmann, Angew. Chem. 2002, 41 , 1290-1309; E. Peris, Top. Organomet. Chem. 2007, 21 , 83-1 16; T. N. Tekavec et al., Top. Organomet. Chem. 2007, 21 , 159-192; F. Glorius, Top. Organomet. Chem. 2007, 21 , 1 -20, auf die hier vollumfänglich Bezug genommen wird.
Die den N-heterocyclischen Carbenen zugrunde liegenden Imidazoliumsalze sind kommerziell erhältlich und sind beispielsweise als ionische Flüssigkeiten wie auch als Lösungsmittel bekannt.
Die Herstellung des einzähnigen N-heterocyclischen Carbenliganden aus dem Imida- zoliumsalz erfolgt in Gegenwart wenigstens einer Base. Geeignete Basen sind beispielsweise ausgewählt unter Hydriden, Hydroxiden, Carbo- naten, Alkoholaten und Amiden der Alkalimetalle, den Hydriden, Hydroxiden, Carbona- ten, Alkoholate und Amiden der Erdalkalimetalle, organischen Aminen, Aryllithium- Verbindungen und Alkyllithium-Verbindungen. Besonders bevorzugt sind Alkalimetallhydroxide, speziell Kaliumhydroxid, und Erdalkalimetallhydroxide sowie die Alkalimetallalkoholate der im erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren eingesetzten Alkohole, speziell Kalium-3-methyl-n-butanolat und Kalium-2-methyl- n-butanolat.
Speziell wird als Base Kaliumhydroxid eingesetzt.
Als Übergangsmetallverbindung V eignen sich Komplexverbindungen und Salze der Übergangsmetalle der 8, 9 und 1 0. Gruppe des Periodensystems (I UPAC), bevorzugt Komplexverbindungen und Salze des Rutheniums und des Iridiums, besonders bevorzugt Komplexverbindungen und Salze des Rutheniums.
Besonders bevorzugt eignen sich als Übergangsmetallverbindung V Verbindungen, die ein unter Ruthenium und Iridium ausgewähltes Übergangsmetallatom und mindestens 2 Liganden aufweisen, die ausgewählt sind unter p-Cymol, Chlorid, Benzol, CO, 1 ,5- Cyclooctadien, Allyl, Acetylacetonat, Dimethylsulfoxid, Cyclopentadienyl, Pentamethyl- cyclopentadienyl, Indenyl, Cycloocten, Hydrid, Ethen und H2O.
Als Übergangsmetallverbindung V eignen sich beispielsweise [Ru(p-cymol)Cl2]2,
[Ru(benzol)Cl2]n, [Ru(CO)2Cl2]n, wobei n jeweils im Bereich von 1 bis 1 00 liegt,

Im erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren wird ein primärer Monoalkohol oder ein Gemisch aus einem primären Monoalkohol und wenigstens einem davon verschiedenen Alkohol zum Carbonsäureester umgesetzt. Beim Einsatz von Alkoholmischungen können sich die gemischten Carbonsäureester bilden. Die Umsetzung lässt sich durch die beiden folgenden Reaktionsgleichungen veranschaulichen:

Sofern man ein Gemisch aus einem primären Monoalkohol und wenigstens einem davon verschiedenen Alkohol umsetzt, wird vorzugsweise der primäre Monoalkohol in
einer Menge von wenigstens 50 mol-%, bezogen auf die gesamte molare Menge an Alkohol, eingesetzt.
Als primäre Monoalkohole im erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren sind praktisch alle pri- mären Monoalkohole geeignet. Die primären Monoalkohole können linear, verzweigt oder zyklisch sein. Die primären Monoalkohole weisen in der Regel 3 bis 10 C-Atome auf. Die primären Monoalkohole weisen in der Regel neben der einen Hydroxylgruppe keine weiteren funktionellen Gruppen auf. Insbesondere handelt es sich bei den primären Monoalkoholen um primäre Alkanole mit vorzugsweise 3 bis 10 C-Atomen, pri- märe Hydroxy-Ci-C4-alkylbenzole, und primäre Hydroxy-Ci-C4-alkyl-C3-C8-cycloalkane. Speziell handelt es sich bei den primären Monoalkoholen um primäre Alkanole mit vorzugsweise 3 bis 10 C-Atomen und insbesondere 3 bis 6 C-Atomen. Geeignete primäre Monoalkohole sind beispielsweise 1 -Propanol, 1 -Butanol, 2-Methyl-n-propanol, 1 - Pentanol, 3-Methyl-n-butanol, 2-Methyl-n-butanol, 1 -Hexanol, 1 -Heptanol, 1 -Octanol, 2- Ethyl-n-hexanol, 2-Propyl-n-heptanol, 1 -Hydroxymethylcyclohexan, Benzylalkohol und 2-Phenylethanol. Die primären Monoalkohole können auch als Mischungen eingesetzt werden.
Geeignete Alkohole, die gegebenenfalls in Mischung mit dem primären Monoalkohol eingesetzt werden, können aliphatisch, cycloaliphatisch oder aromatisch, linear oder verzweigt sein. Es kann sich um sekundäre oder tertiäre Alkohole handeln. Die von den primären Monoalkoholen verschiedenen Alkohole weisen in der Regel 3 bis 10 C- Atome auf. Die von den primären Monoalkoholen verschiedenen Alkohole sind vorzugsweise Monoalkohole und weisen in der Regel neben der einen Hydroxylgruppe keine weiteren funktionellen Gruppen auf. Insbesondere handelt es sich bei den von primären Monoalkoholen verschiedenen Alkoholen um sekundäre oder tertiäre Alkanole mit vorzugsweise 3 bis 10 C-Atomen, Cycloalkanole mit vorzugsweise 5 bis 10 C- Atomen, sekundäre oder tertiäre Hydroxy-Ci-C4-alkylbenzole und sekundäre oder tertiäre Hydroxy-Ci-C4-alkyl-C3-C8-cycloalkane. Beispiele für solche Alkohole sind Isopro- panol, 2-Butanol, tert.-Butanol, Cyclopentanol, Cyclohexanol, 1 -Phenylethanol, Phenol oder 1 -Methyl-n-butanol.
Es können auch Gemische aus verschiedenen Alkoholen, welche aus fermentativen Quellen erhalten werden, eingesetzt werden, zum Beispiel Gemische aus 3-Methyl-n- butanol und 2-Methyl-n-butanol, welche bei der industriellen Herstellung von Bioetha- nol als Nebenprodukt anfallen (sogenannte "Fuselöle").
Die primären Monoalkohole als auch die gegebenenfalls eingesetzten weiteren Alkohole können darüber hinaus Substituenten tragen, die sich unter den Reaktionsbedingun-
gen des erfindungsgemäßen Verfahrens inert verhalten, beispielsweise Alkoxy, Alken- oxy, Dialkylamino und Halogen (F, Cl, Br, I).
In einer speziellen Ausführungsform der Erfindung setzt man einen primären aliphati- sehen C3-Cio-Alkohol oder ein Gemisch primärer aliphatischer C3-Cio-Alkohole, insbesondere einen primären aliphatischen C4-C6-Alkohol oder ein Gemisch primärer aliphatischer C4-C6-Alkohole, um.
In einer ganz speziellen Ausführungsform der Erfindung setzt man als primären Mo- noalkohol Isoamylalkohol oder ein Gemisch des Isoamylalkohols mit 2-Methyl-n- butanol um.
Das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren erfolgt in Gegenwart eines Übergangsmetallcarben- komplexkatalysators K, wie zuvor definiert. Es hat sich als vorteilhaft erwiesen, wenn der katalytisch aktive Teil des Katalysators K zumindest teilweise im flüssigen Reaktionsmedium gelöst vorliegt. In einer bevorzugten Ausführungsform liegen mindestens 90 % des im Verfahren eingesetzten Katalysators K im flüssigen Reaktionsmedium gelöst vor, besonders bevorzugt mindestens 95 % und ganz besonders bevorzugt mehr als 99 %, jeweils bezogen auf die Gesamtmenge im flüssigen Reaktionsmedium.
Erfindungsgemäß wird der zuvor definierte Übergangsmetallcarbenkomplexkatalysator K durch Umsetzung einer Übergangsmetallverbindung V mit einem Imidazoliumsalz in Gegenwart des primären Monoalkohols und der Base hergestellt. Die Menge der Metallkomponente des Katalysators, bevorzugt Ruthenium oder Iridium, beträgt im Allgemeinen 0,1 bis 5000 ppm (Gewichtsteile), insbesondere im Bereich von 1 bis 2000 ppm, speziell 50 bis 1000 ppm, jeweils bezogen auf das gesamte Gewicht des flüssige Reaktionsgemischs. Die Base wird vorzugsweise in einer Menge von 1 bis 20 Äquivalente Base, insbesondere in einer Menge von 1 bis 5 Äquivalente Base, bezogen auf 1 Äquivalent des Imidazoliumsalzes, eingesetzt.
Das Imidazoliumsalz wird vorzugsweise in einer Menge von 1 bis 20 Mol, insbesondere in einer Menge von 1 bis 6 Mol, bezogen auf 1 Mol des Übergangsmetalls in der Übergangsmetallverbindung V, eingesetzt.
Erfindungsgemäß wird der Übergangsmetallcarbenkomplexkatalysator K in Gegenwart des primären Monoalkohols und der Base hergestellt. Hierzu wird man in der Regel so
vorgehen, dass man den primären Monoalkohol oder das Gemisch aus einem primären Monoalkohol und wenigstens einem davon verschiedenen Alkohol, das Imida- zoliumsalz, die Übergangsmetallverbindung V und die Base gemeinsam in den Reaktionsraum einbringt oder den primären Monoalkohol oder das Gemischs aus einem pri- mären Monoalkohol und wenigstens einem davon verschiedenen Alkohol und gegebenenfalls die Base im Reaktionsraum vorlegt und hierzu die den Katalysator bildenden Bestandteile und gegebenenfalls Base zugibt.
Die Umsetzung des primären Monoalkohols oder des Gemischs aus einem primären Monoalkohol und wenigstens einem davon verschiedenen Alkohol erfolgt im Allgemeinen bei einer Temperatur im Bereich von 20 bis 250 °C. Bevorzugt wird das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren bei Temperaturen im Bereich von 100 °C bis 200 °C, besonders bevorzugt im Bereich von 1 10 bis 200 °C durchgeführt. Die Umsetzung des primären Monoalkohols oder des Gemischs aus einem primären Monoalkohol und wenigstens einem davon verschiedenen Alkohol wird im Allgemeinen bei einem Gesamtdruck von 0,1 bis 20 MPa absolut, der sowohl der Eigendruck der Alkohole bzw. des Alkohols bei der Reaktionstemperatur als auch der Druck eines Gases wie Stickstoff, Argon oder Wasserstoff sein kann, durchgeführt. Bevorzugt wird das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren bei einem Gesamtdruck bis 10 MPa absolut, insbesondere bei einem Gesamtdruck bis 1 MPa absolut durchgeführt.
Erfindungsgemäß erfolgt die Umsetzung des primären Monoalkohols oder des Gemischs aus einem primären Monoalkohol und wenigstens einem davon verschiedenen Alkohol in Substanz, d. h., es wird kein zusätzliches Lösungsmittel zu der Reaktionsmischung gegeben. Dementsprechend beträgt der Gehalt an Lösungsmittel in der Reaktionsmischung weniger als 10 Gew.-%, bevorzugt weniger als 5 Gew.-%, besonders bevorzugt weniger als 2 Gew.-% und insbesondere weniger als 1 Gew.-%. Die Reaktionsdauer richtet sich in der Regel nach der Reaktionstemperatur, der Reaktivität der eingesetzten Alkohole und dem gewünschten Umsatz. In der Regel wird man die Umsetzung des primären Monoalkohols bzw. die Umsetzung des Gemischs aus einem primären Monoalkohol und wenigstens einem davon verschiedenen Alkohol soweit führen, dass der Umsatz, bezogen auf den primären Monoalkohol, wenigstens 10 %, insbesondere wenigstens 20 % und speziell wenigstens 25 % beträgt. Es hat sich als vorteilhaft erwiesen, die Umsetzung nicht bis zum Vollumsatz (100 %, bezogen auf den primären Monoalkohol) zu führen, sondern nur bis zu einem Umsatz von maximal 80 % insbesondere maximal 70 %. Die hierfür erforderliche Reaktionsdauer kann
der Fachmann durch Routineversuche ermitteln. Sie liegt im Allgemeinen im Bereich von 15 Minuten bis 100 h, insbesondere im Bereich von 1 h bis 50 h.
Die Veresterung des primären Alkoholes oder des Gemischs aus einem primären Mo- noalkohol und wenigstens einem davon verschiedenen Alkohol erfolgt naturgemäß unter Abspaltung von Wasserstoff (siehe obige Reaktionsgleichungen). Es hat sich als vorteilhaft erwiesen, den Wasserstoff aus dem Reaktionssystem zu entfernen. Auf diese Weise kann man die Umsätze steigern. Dies gelingt entweder durch Ausstrippen mit dem siedenden nicht umgesetzten Alkohol oder durch Zuführung eines Strippgases wie Stickstoff, Kohlendioxid oder Argon.
Die Reaktion kann in den üblichen, dem Fachmann bekannten Vorrichtungen bzw. Reaktoren für Flüssig-Gas-Reaktionen, bei denen der Katalysator homogen gelöst in der Flüssigphase vorliegt, durchgeführt werden. Für das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren können prinzipiell alle Reaktoren eingesetzt werden, welche für Gas-Flüssig-Reaktio- nen unter der gegebenen Temperatur und dem gegebenen Druck grundsätzlich geeignet sind. Geeignete Standardreaktoren für Gas-Flüssig- und für Flüssig-Flüssig- Reaktionssysteme sind beispielsweise in K. D. Henkel, "Reactor Types and Their In- dustrial Applications", Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, 2005, Wiley- VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Kapitel 3.3: "Reactors for gas-liquid reactions" angegeben, auf die hiermit Bezug genommen wird. Als Beispiele seien genannt Rührkesselreaktoren, Rohrreaktoren oder Blasensäulenreaktoren. Die Zuleitung von Alkohol, Übergangsmetallverbindung V, Imidazoliumsalz sowie der Base kann dabei simultan oder getrennt voneinander erfolgen. Die Reaktion kann dabei diskontinuierlich in Batchfahrweise oder kontinuierlich, semikontinuierlich mit Rückführung oder ohne Rückführung durchgeführt werden. Die mittlere Verweilzeit im Reaktionsraum beträgt im Allgemeinen 15 Minuten bis 100 h, insbesondere 1 h bis 50 h.
Nach der Reaktion wird der Carbonsäureester in der Regel von nicht umgesetztem Alkohol vorzugsweise durch Destillation abgetrennt. Der Katalysator K verbleibt mit den Hochsiedern im Sumpf der Destillation zurück und kann wiederverwendet werden. Nicht umgesetzter Alkohol kann wieder in die Reaktion zurückgeführt werden. Die thermische Abtrennung des Alkohols bzw. der Alkohole sowie des Carbonsäureesters erfolgt nach den dem Fachmann bekannten Verfahren, bevorzugt in einem Verdampfer oder in einer Destillationseinheit, umfassend Verdampfer und Kolonne(n), die üblicherweise mehrere Böden, eine Packung oder Füllkörper aufweist.
Die Erfindung wird durch die nachfolgenden Beispiele näher erläutert:
Beispiel 1 :
In einen 250-mL-Dreihalskolben, ausgestattet mit einem Wasserabscheider und einem Thermometer, wurden 0,21 g [Ru(1 ,5-cyclooctadien)Cl2]2, 0,7 g 1 -Methyl-3-η- butylimidazoliumchlorid, 5 g Kaliumhydroxid und 100 g Isomerengemisch aus 3-Methyl- n-butanol und 2-Methyl-n-butanol (destilliertes Produkt, das aus Fuselöl gewonnen wurde; 80 Gew.-% 3-Methyl-n-butanol, 20 Gew.-% 2-Methyl-n-butanol) eingefüllt. Man erhitzte das Gemisch 20 h unter Rühren (Magnetrührer) bei Normaldruck und 170 °C Ölbadtemperatur unter Rückfluss. Nach Reaktionsende lagen im Reaktionsgemisch 72,6 % nichtreagiertes Eduktgemisch sowie 27,1 % des Carbonsäureesters (Isomerengemisch, gebildet aus 3-Methyl-n-butanol und 2-Methyl-n-butanol; Umsatz bestimmt per GC-FI-%) vor. Vom Reaktionsaustrag wurden am Rotationsverdampfer (80 °C Ölbadtemperatur, 20 mbar) 46,3 g abdestilliert (Gemisch aus Eduktgemisch und Carbonsäureester). Der Katalysator und die Base verblieben im flüssigen Rückstand und konnten wiederverwendet werden. Von dem Destillat der Grobtrennung wurde durch Feindestillation das Alkoholgemisch vom Carbonsäureester abgetrennt, und man erhielt im Sumpf der Feindestillation 6,8 g des reinen Carbonsäureesters (Isomerengemisch) in einer Reinheit von 99,2 % (bestimmt per GC-FI-%). Beispiel 2:
In einen 250-mL-Dreihalskolben, ausgestattet mit einem Wasserabscheider und einem Thermometer, wurden 0,21 g [Ru(1 ,5-cyclooctadien)Cl2]2, 0,7 g 1 -Methyl-3-n- butylimidazoliumchlorid, 5 g Kaliumhydroxid und 100 g 1 -Hexanol eingefüllt. Man er- hitzte das Gemisch 20 h unter Rühren (Magnetrührer) bei Normaldruck und 180 °C Ölbadtemperatur unter Rückfluss. Nach Reaktionsende lagen im Reaktionsgemisch 44,1 % nichtreagiertes Edukt sowie 39,5 % des Carbonsäureesters (Hexylhexanoat; Umsatz bestimmt per GC-FI-%) vor. Der Reaktionsaustrag kann wie in Beispiel 1 beschrieben aufgearbeitet werden.
Beispiel 3:
In einen 250-mL-Dreihalskolben, ausgestattet mit einem Wasserabscheider und einem Thermometer, wurden 0,21 g [Ru(1 ,5-cyclooctadien)Cl2]2, 0,7 g 1 -Methyl-3-n- butylimidazoliumchlorid, 5 g Kaliumhydroxid und 100 g Benzylalkohol eingefüllt. Man erhitzte das Gemisch 20 h unter Rühren (Magnetrührer) bei Normaldruck und 240 °C Ölbadtemperatur unter Rückfluss. Nach Reaktionsende lagen im Reaktionsgemisch 10,4 % nichtreagiertes Edukt, 4,7 % Benzaldehyd (Intermediat der Reaktion) sowie
67,4 % des Carbonsäureesters (Benzylbenzoat; Umsatz bestimmt per GC-FI-%) vor. Der Reaktionsaustrag kann wie in Beispiel 1 beschrieben aufgearbeitet werden.
Claims
Patentansprüche:
Verfahren zur Herstellung von Carbonsäureestern, umfassend die Umsetzung wenigstens eines primären Monoalkohols oder eines Gemischs aus einem primären Monoalkohol und wenigstens einem davon verschiedenen Alkohol in Gegenwart eines Übergangsmetallcarbenkomplexkatalysators K, welcher als Zentralatom M mindestens ein Übergangsmetallatom der Gruppe 8, 9 oder 10 des Periodensystems (IUPAC) und mindestens einen einzähnigen N-heterocycli- schen Carbenliganden aufweist, in Gegenwart einer Base, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass man den Katalysator K durch Umsetzung einer Übergangsmetallverbindung V, die mindestens ein Übergangsmetallatom der Gruppe 8, 9 oder 10 des Periodensystems (IUPAC), aber keinen Carbenliganden aufweist, mit einem Imidazoliumsalz in Gegenwart des primären Monoalkohols und der Base herstellt, wobei man die Umsetzung in Substanz durchführt.
Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 , wobei der Katalysator K als Zentralatom M Ruthenium oder Iridium aufweist.
Verfahren nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, wobei der Katalysator K mindestens einen, z. B. 1 , 2, 3 oder 4, N-heterocyclischen Carbenliganden der Formel (I) aufweist,
worin
R1 und R4 unabhängig voneinander für Ci-Cio-Alkyl, C3-Cio-Cycloalkyl, 5- bis 10-gliedriges Heteroaryl, das 1 , 2 oder 3 unter O, N und S ausgewählte Heteroatome als Ringlieder aufweist, oder Aryl stehen, wobei die vier letztgenannten Substituenten unsubstitu- iert sind oder mit einem oder mehreren Substituenten, ausgewählt unter Halogen, Ci-Cio-Alkoxy, CN, Ci-Cio-Alkyl, C3-C10- Cycloalkyl, Phenyl und Naphthyl, substituiert sein können; R2 und R3 unabhängig voneinander für Wasserstoff stehen oder eine der für R1 bzw. R4 genannten Bedeutungen aufweisen.
4. Verfahren nach Anspruch 3, wobei der Katalysator K neben mindestens einem N- heterocyclischen Carbenliganden mindestens einen weiteren Liganden L aufweist, der ausgewählt ist unter CO, Hydrid, aliphatischen Olefinen, Cycloolefinen, carbocyclischen Aromaten, Heteroaromaten, Aldehyden, Ketonen, Halogeniden, Ci-Cio-Carboxylat, Methylsulfonat, Methylsulfat, Trifluormethylsulfat, Tosylat, Me- sylat, Cyanid, Isocyanat, Cyanat, Thiocyanat, Hydroxid, Ci-Cio-Alkoxid, Cyclo- pentadienid, Pentamethylcyclopentadienid und Pentabenzylcyclopentadienid.
5. Verfahren nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, wobei man zur Herstel- lung des Katalysators K ein Imidazoliumsalz der allgemeinen Formel (II) einsetzt,
worin R1, R2, R3 und R4 die in Anspruch 3 genannten Bedeutungen aufweisen,
A für H oder COO" steht und für das Äquivalent eines Anions, insbesondere für Halogenid, Ci-Cio-Carboxylat, Benzoat, MeC6H4COO-, Tosylat, Methansul- fonat, Trifluormethansulfonat, Mesylat, Cyanid, Isocyanat, Thiocyanat, Tetrachloroaluminat, Tetrabromoaluminat, Tetrafluoro- borat, Hexafluorophosphat, Hexafluoroantimonat, Sulfat, Hydroxid, Bis(trifluormethansulfonyl)imid oder Methylsulfat, steht, mit der Maßgabe, dass X" abwesend ist, wenn A für COO" steht.
Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 3 oder 5, wobei in den Formeln (I) und (II) die Variablen R1 und R4 unabhängig voneinander für Ci-Cio-Alkyl, insbesondere für verzweigtes C3-Cio-Alkyl, speziell Isopropyl stehen, R2 und R3 jeweils für Wasserstoff stehen und A für Wasserstoff steht.
7. Verfahren nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, wobei die Base ausgewählt ist unter Hydriden, Hydroxiden, Carbonaten, Alkoholaten und Amiden der Alkalimetalle, den Hydriden, Hydroxiden, Carbonaten, Alkoholaten und Amiden der Erdalkalimetalle, organischen Aminen, Aryllithium-Verbindungen und Alkylli-
thium-Verbindungen, insbesondere unter Alkalimetallhydroxiden und Alkalime- tallalkoholaten.
8. Verfahren nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, wobei man die Base in einer Menge von 1 bis 20 Äquivalente Base, bezogen auf 1 Äquivalent des Imidazoliumsalzes, einsetzt.
9. Verfahren nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, wobei man das Imida- zoliumsalz in einer Menge von 1 bis 20 Mol, bezogen auf 1 Mol des Übergangsmetalls in der Übergangsmetallverbindung V, einsetzt.
10. Verfahren nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, wobei die Übergangsmetallverbindung V ausgewählt ist unter Komplexverbindungen und Salzen des Rutheniums oder Iridiums, die keinen Carbenliganden aufweisen, speziell unter Komplexverbindungen und Salzen des Rutheniums.

Verfahren nach Anspruch 10, wobei die Übergangsmetallverbindung V mindestens ein unter Ruthenium und Iridium ausgewähltes Übergangsmetallatom und wenigstens 2 Liganden aufweist, die ausgewählt sind unter p-Cymol, Chlorid, Benzol, CO, 1 ,5-Cyclooctadien, Allyl, Acetylacetonat, Dimethylsulfoxid, Cyclopen- tadienyl, Pentamethylcyclopentadienyl, Indenyl, Cycloocten, Hydrid, Ethen und H20.
12. Verfahren nach Anspruch 10, wobei die Übergangsmetallverbindung V ausgewählt ist unter [Ru(p-cymol)Cl2]2, [Ru(benzol)Cl2]n, [Ru(CO)2Cl2]n, wobei n jeweils im Bereich von 1 bis 100 liegt, [Ru(CO)3CI2]2 [Ru(1 ,5-cyclooctadien)(allyl)], RuC -H O, [Ru(acetylacetonat)3] , [Ru(dimethylsulfoxid)4Cl2],
[Ru(cyclopentadienyl)(CO)2CI], [Ru(cyclopentadienyl)(CO)2H],

Verfahren nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, wobei man die Übergangsmetallverbindung V in einer Menge von 0,1 bis 5000 ppm Gewichtsteilen, bezogen auf 1 Gewichtsteil des primären Monoalkohols oder des Gemischs aus einem primären Monoalkohol mit wenigstens einem davon verschiedenen Alko- hol, einsetzt.
Verfahren nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, wobei man einen primären aliphatischen C3-Cio-Alkohol oder ein Gemisch primärer aliphatischer C3- Cio-Alkohole, insbesondere einen primären aliphatischen C4-C6-Alkohol oder ein Gemisch primärer aliphatischer C4-C6-Alkohole, umsetzt.
15. Verfahren nach Anspruch 14, wobei man Isoamylalkohol oder ein Gemisch des Isoamylalkohols mit 2-Methylbutanol umsetzt.
Verfahren nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, wobei man die Umsetzung des wenigstens einen primären Monoalkohols oder des Gemischs aus einem primären Monoalkohol mit wenigstens einem davon verschiedenen Alkohol bei einer Temperatur im Bereich von 20 bis 250 °C durchführt.
