Definitions

  • the invention relates to a can lid, in particular for beverage cans, with a metallic lid surface in which an opening is formed which is delimited by a closed edge of the lid surface and which is closed by a closure piece of the metallic lid surface, wherein the closure piece is separated from the surrounding lid surface by a micro-gap which extends at least in sections along the edge of the lid surface, wherein an edge of the closure piece and the edge of the surrounding lid surface adjoin one another at the micro-gap, and wherein the closure piece can be moved out of the plane defined by the opening to release the opening, and with a layer of a plastic material which is applied to a flat side of the metallic lid surface so as to cover the micro-gap.
  • Can lids of this type are used extensively in the manufacture of beverage cans, food cans and the like. They are simple and inexpensive to manufacture, enable space-saving stacking of similar cans and can be easily opened and closed again if necessary by manually moving the closure piece. Due to the micro-gap, no metal particles that could be hazardous to health enter the interior of the can when the can is opened. The tightness of the can lid is ensured by the layer covering the micro-gap, despite the lack of a continuous metal connection between the closure piece and the surrounding lid surface.
  • the layer of plastic material tears in the area of the micro-gap, so that the opening is subsequently free.
  • the layer may stretch and unravel in an undefined manner, for example causing fraying. This is undesirable, particularly because it increases the amount of force required to open the can and may prevent the can contents from escaping through the opening.
  • the optical appearance of the opening is also negatively affected.
  • the invention provides that the edge of the closure piece and the edge of the surrounding lid surface are offset from one another transversely to the plane defined by the opening.
  • one of the adjacent edges protrudes from the other and, when the edges move apart as a result of the opening process, forms a cutting edge that moves through the layer and ensures that the layer is separated reliably and in a defined manner.
  • the layer is therefore sheared rather than torn.
  • the layer of plastic material can be a film or a film-like layer that is connected to the metallic cover surface, for example adhesively.
  • a film of plastic material can be connected to the metallic cover surface by means of lamination.
  • the layer can also be a film laminated onto the metallic cover surface. In principle, the layer could also be created by applying a liquid plastic material and then curing it.
  • the micro-gap can be a punched gap, whereby the adjacent edges can touch each other at least in some areas.
  • the plane defined by the opening can coincide with the surface extension of the lid surface or the closure piece.
  • the offset arrangement of the edge of the closure piece and the edge of the surrounding lid surface can create a step with a square or angular cross-section in the lid surface. Such a step develops a particularly pronounced notch effect that supports the cutting through of the plastic coating.
  • edge of the closure piece and the edge of the surrounding lid surface are offset from each other by a height offset of 0.01 mm to 0.3 mm, preferably from 0.05 mm to 0.12 mm.
  • the edge of the closure piece and the edge of the surrounding lid surface can also be offset from one another by a height offset that is at least 10% and at most 90%, preferably at least 25% and at most 70%, of the thickness of the metal lid surface.
  • a height offset that is at least 10% and at most 90%, preferably at least 25% and at most 70%, of the thickness of the metal lid surface.
  • the edge of the closure piece is offset in the opening direction relative to the edge of the surrounding lid surface. This ensures that the cutting effect starts immediately when the can is opened and not a certain distance must be bridged without cutting. If the layer is applied to the flat side of the lid surface that is at the back in relation to the opening direction, the edge of the surrounding lid surface that protrudes to the rear acts as a cutting edge. If, however, the layer is applied to the flat side of the lid surface that is at the front in relation to the opening direction, the edge of the closure piece that protrudes to the front acts as a cutting edge.
  • micro-gap has a maximum width of 0.02 mm and/or that the closure piece is held in the surrounding lid surface by clamping. This has proven to be particularly advantageous in practice.
  • the layer is applied to an inner side of the metallic lid surface.
  • the layer is therefore preferably located on the side of the lid facing the inside of the can. In general, this is the underside of the metallic lid surface.
  • the layer can be applied over the entire flat side of the metal lid surface. This is advantageous in terms of production technology and ensures a particularly high sealing effect.
  • the layer can be made as a film and/or applied firmly to the metal lid surface, for example sealed.
  • the plastic material can be food-grade polypropylene.
  • the layer has a weakening, in particular a notch or at least a partial notch, which is arranged at a distance from the micro-gap.
  • the weakening reduces the amount of force required to open the can. Due to the distance between the weakening and the micro-gap, a high level of tightness is ensured - even in the event that the weakening is a partial or complete In particular, in the case of a partial or complete notch, it is advantageous if the composite of the metal and the plastic material is of particularly high quality without any significant defects.
  • a handle, pull and/or lever element for lifting or pivoting the closure piece is attached to the closure piece.
  • a user can actuate the handle, pull and/or lever element to press in, lift or pivot the closure piece.
  • a two-armed lever element made of a plastic material can be provided, which is firmly connected to the metal lid surface.
  • the handle, pull and/or lever element has an annular grip section such as a ring tab.
  • a ring tab is particularly advantageous because it can be easily grasped and allows the respective can to be opened using a convenient pulling movement.
  • a special embodiment of the invention provides that a sealing frame made of plastic material enclosing the opening is connected to the surrounding lid surface and a closing unit made of plastic material carrying the closure piece is pivotably attached to the surrounding lid surface, wherein the sealing frame and the closing unit can be releasably connected to one another in a fluid-tight manner via sealing and locking ribs and associated receiving grooves.
  • a can lid has a resealable opening.
  • the sealing and locking ribs and the receiving grooves are designed in such a way that complete reclosure by the snap-lock connection can be felt and possibly perceived acoustically.
  • the invention also relates to a method for producing a can lid, in particular a can lid for beverage cans, preferably a can lid as described above, wherein an at least partially flat Metal element is provided, a closure piece is punched out of the metal element and reinserted into the opening formed by the punching process, and wherein a layer of a plastic material is applied to a flat side of the metal element such that the dividing line between the punched-out closure piece and the opening is covered by the layer.
  • a predetermined height offset is generated between an edge of the closure piece and an adjacent edge of the opening in a direction transverse to the plane defined by the opening.
  • one of the adjacent edges forms a cutting edge that moves through the layer when the can is opened and, via a notch effect, ensures reliable and defined separation of the layer.
  • the adjacent edges are also offset during punching because the closure piece is initially pressed out of the metal element.
  • this is a short-term transitional state that inevitably occurs due to the punching process.
  • the invention provides for a targeted positioning of the adjacent edges in order to create a permanent height offset until the can is opened for the first time.
  • the closure piece is preferably moved incompletely back into the opening. This is advantageous from a process engineering perspective.
  • the height offset is adjusted and/or fixed in a calibration unit after the incomplete return movement.
  • the relevant edges can be positioned relative to one another with high precision.
  • the layer is applied to the flat side of the metal element after the height offset has been created while maintaining the same. This prevents damage to the layer by the device used to create the height offset.
  • the Fig.1 and 2 show a can lid 11 intended in particular for a beverage can, in whose metallic lid surface 13 a reclosable opening system 15 is integrated.
  • the can lid 11 can be connected to an associated container (not shown) via a flanged edge 12.
  • an opening is provided in the metallic lid surface 13, which in the Fig.1 and 2 shown delivery state of the can lid 11 is closed by a section of the metallic lid surface 13 in the form of a closure piece 19.
  • the closure piece 19 is separated from the surrounding cover surface 23 by a micro-gap 21.
  • the outer edge 25 of the closure piece 19 and the inner edge 27 of the surrounding cover surface 23 adjoin one another.
  • the metallic cover surface 13 is preferably formed from a sheet metal layer made of aluminum or tinplate. It has an outer flat side 29 and an inner flat side 30, with a layer 33 made of plastic material being applied to the inner flat side 30 in such a way that it covers the micro gap 21.
  • an adhesive layer (not visible in the figures) can be provided.
  • the layer 33 is applied over the entire surface of the inner flat side 30 of the metallic cover surface 13. In certain applications, it may also be sufficient to provide a layer 33 only in the vicinity of the micro gap 21.
  • the layer 33 can be a plastic film, for example made of polypropylene.
  • a notch 35 may be formed which extends along the micro-gap 21 at a predetermined distance from the latter.
  • the can lid 11 By moving the closure piece 19 out of the plane 37 defined by the opening ( Fig. 2 ), the can lid 11 can be opened. Since there is no material connection between the closure piece 19 and the surrounding lid surface 23 in the area of the micro-gap 21, no metal separation is required when a can provided with the can lid 11 according to the invention is opened for the first time, so that the otherwise unavoidable formation of metallic microparticles is excluded. This avoidance of the formation of microparticles during the opening process, in particular microparticles made of aluminum, is important from a health perspective, because such microparticles inevitably also get into the product contained in the respective can and thus also into the human body.
  • the layer 33 reliably seals the micro-gap 21.
  • the notch 35 which can have a uniform depth or possibly also locally different depths, ensures that only a comparatively small amount of force is required to open the can lid 11.
  • the distance between the micro-gap 21 and the notch 35 which is preferably about 0.2 to 0.5 millimeters, improves the sealing effect.
  • the resealable opening system 15 ( Fig. 1-3 ) comprises a sealing frame 39 made of plastic material which surrounds the opening and is firmly connected to the surrounding cover surface 23. Furthermore, a closing unit 40 made of plastic material is provided which carries the closure piece 19 and is pivotably attached to the surrounding cover surface 23.
  • a locking device 41 ( Fig.3 ), which is formed by sealing and locking ribs 43 and associated receiving grooves 45, is a detachable fluid-tight connection between the sealing frame 39 and the closing unit 40. Accordingly, the can lid 11 is reclosable.
  • a ring-shaped tear-open member 47 preferably also made of plastic, is connected to the closing unit 40 or molded directly onto it and accordingly attached to the closure piece 19.
  • a user can pivot the closure piece 19 upwards out of the plane 37 defined by the opening and thus release the opening by separating the layer 33.
  • a pivot bearing 48 Diametrically opposite the tear-open member 47, a pivot bearing 48 ( Fig.1 ) which is firmly connected to the surrounding cover surface 23.
  • the outer edge 25 of the closure piece 19 and the inner edge 27 of the surrounding lid surface 23 are offset from one another in the delivery state of the can lid 11 transversely to the plane 37 defined by the opening.
  • the corresponding height offset can be 0.01 mm to 1 mm and/or at least 10% and at most 90% of the thickness of the metallic lid surface 13.
  • the outer edge 25 of the closure piece 19 is in the illustrated variant in the opening direction 50, i.e. in Fig.3 and 4 upwards. Due to the offset, a step 51 or edge is formed in the plastic material of the layer 33 on the inner flat side 30 of the metallic cover surface 13.
  • the described height offset is also advantageous for non-resealable can lids without a sealing frame and closing unit, i.e. for standard can lids, as well as for can lids with a closure piece 19 that can be pivoted inwards.
  • a flat metal element for example a sheet metal layer made of aluminum or tinplate, is provided and fed to an embossing device in which the flanged edge 12 or parts thereof as well as grooves, reinforcing beads and the like are formed in the flat metal element.
  • the embossed metal element is fed to a punching device in which the closure piece 19 is punched out of the metal element and reinserted into the opening formed by the punching process.
  • the punched-out closure piece 19 is pressed directly back into the sheet metal layer by spring force during the return stroke of the punch and is held there in a force-locking manner.
  • the closure piece 19 is, however, incompletely moved back into the opening.
  • the metal element is then fed to a calibration device in which the height offset is adjusted and/or fixed after the incomplete return movement. Only then is the inner flat side 30 provided with the layer 33, the application of the layer being carried out in such a way that the height offset is maintained.
  • the embossing device, the punching device and the calibration device can be integrated into a progressive tool, if necessary together with other machining devices.
  • Fig.5 shows a tool 55 of a calibration device which is suitable for adjusting the height offset.
  • An arrangement of punch 57 and die 59 defines a predetermined height difference 60.
