Abstract

In an example the following compositions are used for (a) impregnating and (b) coating electrical windings-(a) 100 p.b.w. of product of condensation of 4:41-dihydroxydiphenyldimethyl methane and epichlorhydrin in presence of alkali (4,6 epoxy equivalents per kg.) and 65 p.b.w. of a hardener comprising a mixture of 35 p.b.w. of phthalic anhydride and 65 p.b.w. of tetrahydrophthalic anhydride: (b) 100 parts epoxy resin, 30 parts of the same hardener, and 200 parts quartz meal, the epoxy resin in (b) having 2,3 to 2,6 epoxy equivalents per kg. The epoxy resin of (a) and the composition (b) were degassed at reduced pressure.ALSO:Electrical windings (such as transformer windings and wound capacitors) are impregnated with a hardenable synthetic resin e.g. an epoxy resin at a temperature at which the resin is in the liquid state, cooled until the unhardened resin adhering to the external surface has a viscous or paste-like consistency, the excess resin is removed, and the impregnated winding is provided with an outer covering of a hardenable synthetic resin containing a filler in a mould and the resin is hardened. The impregnation may be carried out in a mould or by centrifugal casting, and if performed in a mould may be assisted by vacuum and/or applied pressure.
