Abstract

A sheet material for making copies by heatinduced interaction between a silver soap of an organic acid and a reducing agent for silver ions, upon heating to a conversion temperature within the range of 90 to 150 C., comprises a layer containing at least the silver soap e. g. silver behenate or stearate and at least 0À01 mol of an alkyl substituted phenol being insufficient by itself to form with the silver soap a dense image on heating for 4 secs. at 90 to 150 C. and the phenol being such that a test specimen with an equal weight of silver behenate and 1/5 said weight of phthalazinone forms a uniformly blended trace deposite requiring a period of at least 6 secs. preheat at 100 C. before darkening within a period of 2 secs. at 100 C. Specified alkyl phenols are 2, 6-di-t-butyl-p-cresol, 2, 6-di-t-butyl-4-methylphenol, 2, 6-di-t-butyl-4- methoxymethylphenol, 2, 6-di-t-butyl-4-ethylphenol, 2, 6-di-t-butyl-4-octyl-phenol, p-cresol, 2, 4, 6- tri-t-amylphenol and 4, 4'-methylene bis(2, 6-di-tbutylphenol). The reducing agent, which is pyrogallol or catechol and preferably a vaporizable photo-sensitive reducing agent for silver ions which on exposure to actinic radiation is rendered incapable of reducing silver ion such as 1-hydroxy- 4-methoxy naphthalene, 1-hydroxy- 2-methyl-4- methoxynapthalene, 1-hydroxy-4-ethoxy-naphthalene, 4, 4'-dimethoxy-1, 1'-dihydroxy-2, 2'-binaphthyl, 1, 1'-dihydroxy-2, 2'-binaphthyl, 1, 4-dihydroxy napthalene, 1, 3-dihydroxy naphthalene, 1-hydroxy- 4-amino naphthalene, the condensation product of 1, 5-dihydroxynaphthalene and acetone, 1-hydroxy- 2-phenyl-4-methoxy naphthalene and the condensation of 1, 5-dihydroxynaphthalene and adipoylchloride, may be present (i) in the silver soap layer (ii) in a layer coated over the silver soap layer or (iii) in a layer coated on a separate support. In (i) and (ii) an image may be formed by imagewise exposure to heat followed by fixing by exposure to light or imagewise exposure to light followed by overall heat. In (iii) an image is formed by exposing the sheet containing the reducing agent imagewise to light followed by heating said sheet in contact with the layer containing the silver soap or imagewise exposing the two sheets to heat when in contact. The silver soap layer may contain a toner e.g. phthalizinone or phthalic anhydride.
