Abstract

A packer has a resilient tubular member 6 reinforced with fabric and formed with a cylindrical slit 11, the member being fixed at each end to the packer and expanded into contact with the wall of the borehole by liquid supplied through the packer supporting tubing T. A rubber ball is dropped down the tubing to close a passage 4 at the lower end of the packer, the liquid is supplied to the tubing and passes through holes 3 to expand the member, a tube I is moved downwardly to close the holes and maintain the member in its expanded condition, and the ball is expelled from the tube by the pressure of cement used for cementing the lower part of the well. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown) the holes have non-return valves (21) and the liquid is drained from behind the packer by rotating a part (20) of the packer to open a further non-return valve (28). In a further modification (Fig. 5 not shown) the inlet and drainage openings of the space behind the member are connected to a liquid filled chamber (32) having a flexible internal wall (33) which permits the pressure of the liquid in the tubing to pressurize the liquid in the chamber.
