Abstract
A rolling mill comprises a housing 10 supporting a pair of shafts 13, 19 on which a pair of co-operating work rolls 16, 21 are mounted in cantilever fashion relative to the housing, prestressing force-applying means being mounted offset from the rolls to exert a force on the shafts greater than the reduction force so that the prestressing force is reduced by at least a portion of the reduction force during rolling. The shafts 13, 19 are mounted on bearings 14, 15, interconnected by gearing 41, 42 and driven from a spindle 43. The rolls 16, 21 have cooperating grooves 17, 22 for rolling wire or bars. Mounted on each shaft, adjacent the rolls is a triangular shaped arm 47, 48 in roller bearings 45, 46. One arm 47 has a prestressing screw 49 mounted in a nut 51 fixed to the arm, the screw engaging the lower arm 48 to prestress the shafts. A load cell 53 is positioned between the arms on the opposite side of the arms to measure the force of the screw directly. The housing 10 has a bore 11 for the shaft 13 and a window 12 in which the chock 18 of the lower shaft is positioned, Fig. 4 (not shown). The position of the chock 18 is adjustable horizontally by screw means 25 and vertically by wedges 28 which are movable by screw means 32. The chock is clamped in position by wedges 36, 37 or by piston cylinder assemblies, Figs. 7, 8 (not shown). In alternative similar embodiments the prestressing arms are mounted between the rolls and the housing, Fig. 5 (not shown), or in the housing, Fig. 6 (not shown). The rolling mill described is a " hard " mill, i.e. rigid, but the parts can be made more resilient if desired, i.e. a spring or like member at the fulcrum of the arms 46, 47, or under the screw 49.
