Abstract
A catalyst obtained by contacting, in the absence of solvent and at 20 DEG C. to 150 DEG C., a compound of a metal of sub-groups IVA, VA or VIA with a metal (including silicon) or compound of such a metal of sub-groups IVB, VB or VIB of the Periodic Table is used for the polymerization of olefins under a pressure below 50 atmospheres. The preparation of the catalyst may be carried out in the presence of an inert solid, particularly a polyolefin, to produce a supported catalyst. Exemplified catalysts are TiCl4/Sn(C4H9)4, prepared in the presence of polyethylene powder, and used for the polymerization of ethylene using hexane as solvent, and TiCl4/Si(C2H5)3H optionally with polyethylene support and with AlCl3, and used for the polymerization of ethylene in hexane.ALSO:A catalyst is obtained by contacting, in the absence of solvent and at 20 DEG C to 150 DEG C., a compound of a metal of sub-groups 4a, 5a or 6a with a compound of a metal of sub-groups 4b, 5b, or 6b or of silica. The preparation of the catalyst may be carried out in the presence of an inert solid, particularly a polyolefin, to produce a supported catalyst. The catalyst may also be activated with AlCl3. The Examples describe the preparation of TiCl4/Si (C2H5)3H, TiCl4/Si (C2H5)3 H supported on polyethylene and TiCl4/Si (C2H5)3 H/AlCl3 supported on polyethylene.
