Abstract

A selector of container closing capsules C1, C2, C3, Figs. 1, 2, of conventional type consisting of a wall a of revolution, an end wall b which is plane and without projections and with an edge c to the wall a defining a cavity d, comprises a horizontal circular plate 2 rotatably mounted about axis X-X with a fixed cylindrical wall 8 with a gap from n to m constituting with a fixed guide 9 an outlet passage 10 for capsules heaped on the plate 2, and a rotor R arranged to feed capsules such as C1 whose cavity d is facing upwardly to a discharge passage 15 and allow capsules such as C2 whose cavity d is facing downwardly to a discharge passage 16. If the capsules such as C3 on the plate 2 are in a reclining position they are returned to a vertical position C1 or C2 by the edge of a plate 26 on the rotor R when they arrive in the passage 10. The rotor R comprises two sets of balls 30, 34 biased respectively by weights 32, 37, the former set acting as selecting elements and the latter set as a sort of starwheel drive to place the capsules under the balls 30. Capsules fed by the plate 2 to the passage 10 in the inverted position C1 are conveyed to the passage 15 since one of the balls 30 enters the cavity d (see 30a, Fig. 2) drops into it (30b) and abuts (30c) at p the inner face of the wall a and then abandons it (30d). Capsules in the upright position C2 have their adherence to the plate 2 increased by the weight of the ball 30 and the weight 32 and are driven by the plate 2 to the passage 16. In the modification shown in Fig. 5 selecting fingers 39 raised and lowered by a ball 47 running on a ramp 45 are adapted to select polyethylene closing capsules having a wall a adapted to cap the neck of a bottle, an end wall b and a shallow cavity d the end e of which is a grid or filter. These capsules can be employed after cutting the end wall b for breaking a stream of liquid passing therethrough and retaining the drops of liquid which might trickle when the bottle is returned to its vertical position and are of utility as pouring caps.
