Abstract

A tractor for manoeuvring trailers carrying shipping containers in confined spaces has steering control means disposed in a driving cab 9 which is displaceable laterally between locations adjacent the opposite sides of the tractor. The cab 9 is moved along transverse guide rails 14 on the tractor chassis 1 by an electric or hydraulic motor 19 controlled from within the cab. A driving seat 24 in the cab has a reversible backrest 25, and two steering wheels 26, 27 enable the driver to face in either direction. The steering wheels 26, 27 are connected to steerable ground wheel 8 by hydraulic means including a valve allowing either steering wheel to be effective as required. A fifth wheel plate 41 is displaceable on pivoted arms 36 by hydraulic rams 42 to raise the front of a semi-trailer 47 coupled thereto. Towing brackets 7, 48 are provided at both ends of the frame 1. An engine 2 is coupled to driven wheels 5 through a gear-box 3 and final drive unit 4.
