Abstract

The slag flow in an electric arc furnace having molten iron therein with a slag cover may be directed towards the electrode by injecting through the furnace sidewall downwards and at an acute angle to the slag cover solid and/or fluid material at a region between the side wall and the electrode such that the injected material causes the slag to flow generally towards the electrode arc region with a velocity and volume rate sufficient to shield the furnace sidewall from the arc. When solid materials are added they may be fluorspar, lime, iron oxide, carbon, iron alloying material, or mixtures thereof. Further steel making materials may be added through the furnace roof e.g. in a stream of air. When fluid material is used this may be cold or pre-heated air.
