Abstract

In the data processing system containing a computer urgent tasks are processed in real time, that is to say at the instant at which they occur. However, this process may be found to be inadequate for protecting the computer against work overload during high traffic demand. The degree of occupancy of the computer is therefore determined by measuring the idle unoccupied time between repeated executions of a particular basic program of the lowest class of priority. The idle unoccupied time between time intervals of 10ms is measured in units of 25 mu s and compared with an upper and a lower limit value. Depending on the result of the comparison, the work load is reduced, left unchanged or increased. The system is used, in particular, for telecommunication switching purposes.
