Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce the load of a converter and economically manufacture a low carbon steel by discharging molten steel of higher blowing out C content from the converter and subjecting the molten steel to self decarburization to a predetermined carbon grade by vacuum degassing and oxygen blowing. CONSTITUTION:In refining of a low carbon steel contg. C<0.05%, molten steel contg. C>0.09% at the time of blowing out is discharged from a converter. Ferroalloy other than a small amt. of Fe-Mn is not added to the molten steel, and the free oxygen content of the steel is regulated to below 350 ppm. The steel is then treated in a vacuum degassing unit under a reduced press. of 300-100 mmHg to carry out decarburization and degassing according to the reaction C+O CO. As the reaction proceeds, the degassing vessel is evacuated to lower the CO partial press., thereby preventing the decarburization rate from dropping. The amt. of oxygen reduced by the above reaction in the steel is supplied by blowing oxygen. After blowing oxygen up to a carbon content at which a difference between decarburization rate according to oxygen blowing and self decarburization rate according to the above reaction is eliminated, steel of a predetermined carbon content is manufactured by self decarburization.
