Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable discrimination of polarity of surface potential to be measured by applying constant positive or negative bias to a potentiometer casing and its internal circuit.
CONSTITUTION: In a surface potentiometer having an outer conductive cylinder 52 including a surface charge detecting window 65, a cylindrical chopper 53 including a potential measuring window 64 rotated by a sensor motor 55, a surface potential measuring electrode 54, and a preamplifier printed board 56 including internally an impedance converter Q1 for converting the measured signal of a high impedance induced at the electrode 54 to a low impedance signal, bias voltage of substantially equal level are applied from a developing bias control circuit through lead wires 60, 61 to the cylinder 52 and the converter Q1. Thus, the output 62 of the converter Q1 detects the difference between the drum potential and the sensor bias in high fidelity.
