Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a rust inhibitor based on a 20W60C α-olefin-maleic anhydride copolymer with a specified wt. average molecular wt. which inhibitor has solubility in oil solvent, is firmly adsorbed on a metal surface, and can exhibits a superior rust preventing effect.
CONSTITUTION: Maleic anhydride and 20W60, pref. 35W50C α-olefin are copolymerized in a molar ratio of 1W2, pref. 1.2W1.4 to obtain a copolymer with a wt. average molecular wt. of 2000W30000, pref. 5000W20000, and using this copolymer as a principal component a rust inhibitor is prepared. A product obtd. by hydrolytic ring-opening of the copolymer or a salt of the product may be used as the principal component. This inhibitor is dissolved in oil such as mineral oil or grease by 0.1W 0, pref. 0.5W5% and used as rust preventing oil.
