Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a colorless title copolymer having improved thermal stability, and useful as a packaging material, etc. economically, in an industrial scale, by saponifying an α-olefin-vinyl ester copolymer and treating the product with an organic peroxide.
CONSTITUTION: An α-olefin-vinyl ester copolymer (e.g. ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, etc.) is heated and saponified in a low boiling point alcohol, e.g. methanol, etc., in the presence of an alkali catalyst, etc. Water and an organic peroxide (e.g. benzoyl peroxide, etc.) are added to the reaction mixture at 30W 100°C to treat the saponified product. If desired an ethylenic unsaturated carboxylic acid (e.g. acrylic acid, etc.) or its anhydride is grafted onto the product. The vinyl ester content in the copolymer is preferably 10W50wt%.
