Abstract

PURPOSE: To ensure a high-speed detection of the inclination, by obtaining the projection integrated pattern through the processing of the image pickup signal obtained by picking up the 2-dimensional pattern and then comparing the projection integrated pattern with the known reference value.
CONSTITUTION: The image pickup signal of image pickup device 4 is compared with a proper threshold level through binary coding circuit 4, and then separated into character pattern 2 and background 3. Thus the binary coded signal showing the character region. At the same time, this binary coded signal is quantized by quantizing circuit 6 of the next stage with every picture element. Counter 7 counts the significant picture element number corresponding to the character row 2, and this contents of counting are stored in memory 8 to form a projection integrated pattern. On the other hand, the reference value (with the inclination known previously) of the projection integrated pattern corresponding to row 2 is stored previously into memory 10 via input/output device 11. Then the degree of inclination is identified for row 2 through CPU circuit 9 and based on the projection integrated pattern of memory 8 and the reference value of memory 10.
