Abstract
PURPOSE: To purify the aqueous solution of acetic acid while reducing the loss of acetic acid by a method wherein an aqueous acetic acid soluction containing an inorganic monobasic acid is fed into a desalting chamber of an electrodialyzer comprising an ion exchange membrane and the pH of the solution is ajusted.
CONSTITUTION: A crude aqeous solution of acetic acid containing the inorganic monobasic acid is supplied from a tank 1 for the crude solution to a tank 2 for liquid circulted into the desalting chamber. The aqueous solution of acetic acid is then circulated between the tank 2 and the electrodialyzer 3 based on the ion exchange membrane method, in which electrodialysis is conducted. During the electrodialysis, said monobasic acid in the solution permeates through the ion exchange membrane into a concentrating chamber, therby increasing the pH in the concentrating chamber. On the other hand, the pH of the aqueous solution of acetic acid in the desalting chamber is maintained in the range of 0.7W2.0 by the liquid being fed from the tank 1 into the tank 2. In addition, the circulating aqueous solution of acetic acid is taken out via a taking-out port 5 of the tank 2 in an amount corresponding to the feed amount of the crude aqueous solution of accetic acid.
