Abstract

PURPOSE:To detect welded part simply without contact, by using two probes which give ultrasonic wave signals to the metallic material and detect the reflected waves and detecting the difference between the detected levels of both probes. CONSTITUTION:A steel pipe 1 having a welded part 2 is rotated at a slow speed. The probes 3A and 3B are constituted by a winding of a core which is excited by a DC power source 4 and a transmitting and receiving winding to which a pulse current is supplied by a pulse generator 5. When the pulse current is applied to the transmitting and receiving winding under the state the DC magnetic field is applied to the steel pipe, varying distortion is formed on the surface of the steel pipe and propatated to the inside as an ultrasonic wave. The reflected wave from the inside is detected by the transmitting and receiving winding and inputted to amplifiers 6A and 6B. When the welded part 2 faces one of the probe, the difference between the detected signal levels of both probes is generated because the attenuation of the ultrasonic wave at the welded part is large. Said difference is detected by subtracting circuit 7, an integrating circuit 8, and a comparator 9, and a relay 10 is driven.
