Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain sufficient mold strength and to obviate the occurrence of blocking by coating resin coated sand grains with a binder prepd. by compounding specific percentage of aromatic sulfonic acid with a novolak type phenolic resin.
CONSTITUTION: Resin coated sand grains for molds are coated with a binder prepd. by compounding 0.3W3wt% an aromatic sulfonic acid with a novolak type phenolic resin. The sand grains coated with such binder provide sufficient mold strength when molded by a convertional method because the m.p. of the novolak type phenolic resin which is a main component is low and said resin has low mol.wts. There is no possibility at all for causing blocking owing to the effect of increasing a melt-sticking point by the compounded aromatic sulfonic acid.
