Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a steel with superior pitting resistance by preventing a surface high residual austenite layer from being made thicker by a specified heat treating method. CONSTITUTION:1) A carburizing and air cooling process where an ordinary case hardening steel is carburized in order to obtain a hardening depth corresponding to the load surface pressure and bending stress. 2) A soft-nitriding process where the surface nitrogen content is increased. The thickness of the resulting compound layer is adjusted to <= about 10mum, and the process is carried out at about 500- 630 deg.C. 3) A copper plating process which is carried out since most of nitrogen is released from the surface and nitrogen does not remain effectively when the steel is not plated. 4) A reheating and hardening process where hardening is carried out by reheating and holding for a suitable time enough to convert the compound layer into a solid soln. and not making the residual austenite layer thicker. 5) A shot peening process where the copper plating is removed by peeling.
