Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled fibers, having high heat resistance, and useful for heat insulating materials, catalytic carriers, etc., by melt spinning a specific mixture of K with Ti and Zr of specific composition, treating the resultant fibers with water and an acid, removing partilly the K2O component form the fibers, and heat-treating the treated fibers at a high temperature.
CONSTITUTION: A water-soluble potassium sast, e.g. potassium carbonate, and oxides or hydroxides of titanium and zorconium, e.g. titanium dioxide and zirconium dioxide, as raw materials are mixed at a molar ratio K2O/(TiO2+ZrO2)=1/(2W8) and TiO2/ZrO2=1/(0.01W0.5). The resultant mixture is then melt spun to give K2O-TiO2- ZrO2 glassy fibers. The K2O component in the resultant fibers is then partially extracted and removed with water or a solution of a mineral acid and/or organic acid. The treated fibers are heat-treated at 500W1,200°C and crystallized to afford the aimed fibers.
