PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance useful as a perfume, etc. in high yield, by isomerizing an ethynylcarbinol compound in the presence of a polycondensation product of orthovanadate salt, etc. with a halogenosilane and further a salt of a weak acid.
CONSTITUTION: An ethynylcarbinol compound of formula IV (R1 is H or lower hydrocarbon group; R2 is hydrocarbon group, or R1 and R2 together from a cyclic group; R3 is H or hydrocarbon group), e.g. 1-ethynyl-cyclohexanol, is isomerized in the presence of a polymer obtained by condensing an orthovanadate salt of formulaI(M is alkali metal) or metavanadate salt of formula II with a halogenosilane of formula III (R' and R" are hydrocarbon groups; X is halogen) as a catalyst. In the process, a salt of a weak acid, preferably a monobasic acid having a dissociation constant of 1×10-6W1×10-2 (25°C) or a polybasic acid having the primary dissociation constant of 1×10-6W1×10-2 is added to the isomerization system to give the aimed compound of formula V.
