Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce carbonaceous microbeads having a uniform grain size distribution in a high yield, by dispersing a powdery mesophase pitch in a particular org. medium, emulsifying and removing the dispersion medium. CONSTITUTION:A pulverized and classified powder mesophase pitch which has an optically anisotropic region of at least 75%, a toluene insoluble content of 60-100%, and a quinoline insoluble content of up to 60% is homogeneously dispersed in a dispersion medium (dioctyl phthalate) having a b.p. higher than the softening temp. of the powdery mesophase pitch and contg. 0.1-3.0wt.% heat-resistant dispersant. The resultant dispersion is heated at a temp. higher than the softening temp. while stirring so as to obtain an emulsion the medium is removed from the emulsion thereby obtaining globular mesocarbon microbeads. The beads are, according to necessity, subjected to heat stabilization treatment in an oxidizing gas atmosphere such as air, O2 or a halogen compd., followed by calcination in an inert gas or in a vacuum so as to effect graphitization. Thus, there are obtd. carbonaceous microbeads having a grain size of 3-100mum.
