Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a fluorescent tube system with superior temperature characteristics by providing a resistance element in a fluorescent tube or at its outer peripheral part, and providing a preheating circuit equipped with a power source for driving the resistance element, a switch for turning on and off the power source, and a temperature sensor which supplies temperature information on the fluorescent tube to a timer circuit. CONSTITUTION:The fluorescent tube 5 has the resistance element 6 in or nearby the tube and the temperature detecting element 7 is provided on the tube wall. A temperature detecting element 7 operates as part of a temperature detecting circuit 9, whose output is connected to the switch means 11 provided so as to control the on-off state of the power source 12 for preheating through the timer circuit 10. When the fluorescent tube is excited, the temperature detecting element 7 detects the temperature of the fluorescent tube 5 and sends the temperature information to the timer circuit 10, which turns on the switch means 11 for a prescribed time determined by the temperature of the fluorescent tube; and then the resistance element 6 generates heat to heat the fluorescent tube 5. Consequently, preheating is performed only in a constant time right after the start and a preheating device is obtained which controls the preheating time, i.e. preheating electric power according to the ambient temperature.
