Abstract
PURPOSE:To easily produce a quartz glass having high hardness and uniform hardness distribution, by filling an N compound powder to the circumference of a quartz glass having a thickness thinner than a specific level and heating and pressing the quartz glass in N2 gas atmosphere at a high temperature. CONSTITUTION:Powder 2 of an N compound such as Si3N4 or BN having a particle size of about 50mum-5mm is filled in the circumference of a quartz glass 1 having a thickness of <=5mm. The quartz glass is heated in N2 gas atmosphere at >=1,400 deg.C keeping the above state and pressed under >=10MPa pressure. The Si-O bond in the quartz glass is substituted with stronger Si-N bond by the action of the filed N compound powder and N2 in the atmosphere to form a denser structure and improve the hardness. The pressing of the quartz glass can be carried out by the use of a hot press and HIP (hot hydrostatic press). The number 3 in the figure is a carbon mold.
