Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce 3-aminopropanol under a mild condition inexpensively, by catalytically hydrogenating ethylene cyanohydrin in the presence of a Raney nickel catalyst by using a solvent of an alcohol containing a small of ammonia. CONSTITUTION:Ethylene cyanohydrin is catalytically hydrogenated in the presence of Raney nickel catalyst by using a solvent of an alcohol such as methanol, ethanol or ethylene glycol containing 1-35wt.%, especially 3-25wt.% ammonia preferably at 60-725 deg.C under 1-30kg/gm<2> hydrogen pressure to give 3- aminopropanol. The weight ratio of the Raney nickel catalyst to ethylene cyanohydrin is preferably 0.005-0.1. By this method, activity of the catalyst is not lowered ad occurrence of high-boiling substances such as secondary amine as by-product can be suppressed. 3-Aminopropanol is useful as an intermediate for surface active agents, drugs and agricultural chemicals.
