Abstract

The method involves issuing by a payment device (I), e.g a smart card or I.C card, to a payment station (II) at least a first payment value (beta M). Payment values are representative for one or more payment units to be settled. Each subsequent payment value (beta M-1, beta M-2..) is related to the first payment value by a one-way function (F) in such a manner that the first payment value may be obtained from a further payment value by repeatedly applying the function (F). The payment station, after receipt of a payment value, checks by applying the function (F) whether the payment value received is correct.
