Abstract

A perforated tube, which may contain a sand filter, is placed in the lateral well. The perforated tube has openings which vary in size or number, or both, along the length of the perforated tube. The annulus between the walls of the well and the perforated tube is insulated and particulate matter is injected into the annulus so that it is homogeneously packed in the annulus. The variation in size or / and the number of openings in the perforated tube is such that formation fluids will flow into the tube at substantially the same rate along the length of the tube.
