Abstract
A shape is made from a polymer such that its surface takes account of subsequent shrinkage in moulding. A ceramic mould is prepared from the shape to give a mould cavity. A metallic powder with or without other solid materials, including fibres, fine ceramic particles, graphite or ceramics is put into the cavity. A lid is put on the cavity and this is put in a deformable, gas-tight container where it is surrounded by a powder. Air is evacuated and the container is heated to the temperature required for isostatic pressing. External isostatic pressure is applied to give a high-density pressing.
