The curing system compositions include a capto-polymer crosslinking agent; an inorganic base; and an ionium salt. The ionium salt has a formula selected from the group consisting of (chemical formula) and (chemical formula) where Z is a nitrogen or phosphorus atom, R1 to R4 are independent alkyl or aryl groups having between 2 and 8 carbon atoms, and the total number of carbon atoms on R1 to R4 is between 10 and 14; wherein R5 and R6 are alkyl groups having between 1 and 8 carbon atoms, and the total number of carbon atoms on R5 to R6 is between 5 and 9 carbon atoms; and wherein X is an anion. A method for curing a chlorinated elastomer composition according to the present invention includes the following steps: (1) preparing the chlorinated elastomer composition; (2) preparing the curing system composition as described above; (3) contacting said chlorinated elastomer composition with said curing system composition; and (4) carrying out the curing of said chlorinated elastomer composition. This invention presents an improved curing system mixture and a method for curing a chlorinated elastomer mixture. This curing system mixture includes a polymer capto crosslinking agent; an inorganic base; and an ionium salt. This ionium salt has a formula selected from the group consisting of (chemical formula) and (chemical formula) where Z is a nitrogen or phosphorus atom, R1 through R4 are independent alkyl or aryl groups having between 2 and 8 carbon atoms, and the total number of carbon atoms on R1 through R4 is between 10 and 14; where R5 and R6 are alkyl groups having between 1 and 8 carbon atoms, and the total number of carbon atoms on R5 through R6 is between 5 and 9; and where X is an anion, a method for curing a chlorinated elastomer mixture according to the present invention includes the following steps: (1) preparing the chlorinated elastomer mixture; (2) preparing the curing system mixture as described above; (3) contacting said chlorinated elastomer mixture with said curing system mixture; and (4) carrying out the curing of said chlorinated elastomer mixture.
