OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE BROWN HOISTING MACHINERY COMPANY, or'cLnvELAND, onto.
MEANS FOR OPERATING SHOVEL-IBUGKETS AND SIMILAR RECEP'IAGLES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be .it known that I, JOHN P. Down, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Means for Operating Shovel-Buckets and Similar Receptacles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specifica-,
tions herewith, wherein similar parts are designated by similar letters in each case.
The device in question, from its nature, is more pertinent to the class of scoops or shovel-buckets used in connection with boomcranes for excavating or handling material,
wherein the bucket proper is pivotally suspended within the bail, at points on its side that are forward of the center of gravity of the bucket when empty, but behind such cen ter when filled, so that whenfree'to move, the bucket will automatically revolve around these points of suspension, discharge its load and immediately right itself into the proper position, with reference to the bail, to take in a newload. I 1
By reason of the manner of poising the bucket-body, within its bail abovereferred to, tail-latches or corresponding devices, are usual and necessary for their operation, in order not only to preserve a fixed relation between'the bucket and the bail while the load is being scooped, but also to prevent apremature discharge of the load as it is being carried around by the crane to the dumping point. It is consequently highly desirable to so contrive and arrange th. taillatching feature of these devices, that the same may bereadily unloaded at the will of the operator, and, at any point of its suspension beneath the boom desired.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an excavating crane with its bucket shown in full lines, upon the material-bed beneath the head of the boom, in position to be hauled in for its load. Dotted lines, ,in
the figure, indicate the several positions the bucket will assume from the time itv has gained a load until the same is dumped. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the bucket, and associated parts, shown in full lines in Fig. 1. Fig.3 is a similar view, when the bucket is in position for carrying, with the lower part of the bucket" broken away. Fig. 4 is a like view when the bucket is free to dump,

and, Fig. 5 is a broken view of the bail and unlatching features shown in Fig. 2. in the direction of the arrow in that figure.
C represents a boom or excavating crane of an accepted type, and 'S a shovel-bucket to be operated therewith; L is the usual haul-rope connected at its outer end to the bucket in the manner to be pointed out, and extending backwardly to a controlling drum D on said crane.
L is the hoisting-rope whose outer end is connected to the bail and which extends upwardly to and over a sheave V in the head of the boom and thence backwardly to a controlling drum on the crane.
B is the bail. "It pivotally engages the sides of the bucket at points if, t, thereon that are forward of the buckets center of gravity when empty and behind the same when filled. Centrally and at the top of the bail is a rigid clevis E,.-having upwardly projecting ears R R at the sides thereof, intermediately of which ears, a deep scored sheave-Like member A is mounted upon the transverse center-pin or axle P. As shown,
said member is shaped as'if oppositely converging segments have been excerpted from the portion thereof that is nearer the 'front of the bucket when the latter isupright with respect to the bail, and in position for carrying its load as shown in Fig. 3. Tot-his portion a clevis E (to which the outer end of Y the haul-rope L is fastened) is pivotally connected by a pin P. A third clevis E (to which the outer end of the hoist-rope L is fastened) straddles the ears R, and pivotally engages the pin P exteriorly of said ears. a In order to limit the rotary movement of the member A, around the axle P, stops 8, s, are provided on each side of said member, near and above the pin P to bring up against the clevis Z In the fiangeson the sheave-member A, on the portion thereof that extends at the rearof the bail when the bucket is in position for carrying, as aforesaid, are elongated slots- O, concentric with the score of the sheavepart, to receive and movably support. therein a cross-ping; which connects two parallel bars F, F, through their upper ends that overlapv said slot for the purpose. v
The tail-latch proper consists of a bar T whose upper end is pivotally attached, by a are located on the rear of said bail in a vertical plane extending beneath and between the bars F, F. In order to limit and arrest any tendency of the tail-latch bar T to swing 5 beneath the bail when free of its locking engagement with the bucket, the under side of the same near the oint of its attachment to the bail, is prefera ly given a forward hornlike projection n adapted to come up into bearing against the bail under the conditions and with the result referred to. On the same side of said latch-bar, at a suitable point to overhang and engage the rear upper edge of the bucket when the latter is in an upright position within the bail, isa second projection or nose n. The lower end'e, of
the bar T,- extends downwardl '-and out,
wardly from said nose' 'or shoul er nhati an angle with the upper portion of said bar.- The'parallel bars F, F, that are hung to the cross-pin p within the slots '0, Q, as de-- scribed, extend downwardly, respectively, at each side of the bar T to a point below the inclined portion 6, where they are joined to gether, in-a trapeze-like frame, by a cross-v roller indicated by 1'. Here, in order to provide against anyundue forward swing of the same, the bars are given sharp upturns f, at each side, to above the bar T, at which point they are connected together by a cross-pin 72 As the immediate actuating medium for unlatching the parts described, a tag-line or rope L is fastened, at its outer end, to the pin P and carried downand around the score in the sheave-member A, and backwardly to a controlling drum D on a 'the crane.
Having thus described: a concrete application and embodiment of'my' invention, its
4 mode of operation will readily be apparentto one skilled in the art to Wine it belongs. The crane with which the bucket cotiperates, being stationed in afworkingposition with its boom approximately above thematerial through whichfthe scoop is to be-ma'de, and
the bucket suspended beneath the boomhead, the bucket is lowered into an operative position by simply paying out the hoistingrope L In said position the bucket will, of
course, be front-down Withthe latch-bar T,
locked against the same, and the pull of the haul-rope L will be in substantial alinement with the pivotal points at t and the pin P as shown in Fig. 2. During the process of 65 lowering, the sheave-member-A will have rotated about said pin, and around the pin 20 in the concentric slots 0, without engaging the latter pin, however, or-actuating the unlocking bars F. The haul-rope Dand the tagline L may'now be wound up, at equal pace, on their respective drums Q and D and, at the same time, the hoist-rope L correspondingly unwound, until the bucket has been dr'agged inwardly beneath the boom and its fillmade. Thereupon, the drum 1),
clined portion c until it li controlling the tag-line'L being idle, the drum D, controlling the rope L, is braked, and the hoist-rope Ii Wound in until the pull of the latter ropehas so far overcome the resistanee'of the brake on the druni D and the weight of the bucket and load, as to raise the bucket from its prone position on the material bed, and carry the same upwardly to any desired point beneath the boom. During this operation it is evident '15 that, under the influence of the major force exerted in the direction of the hoist line L, the pull of the haul-rope Lwill gradually come into direct opposition to that of L and the sheave-member A, in consequence, will be reversely rotated about the pins P and 2 until the end of theslot is brought upwardly, into close proximity to the pin p, as in Fig. 3, so that upon any further rotation of A in the same-direction, such end of the slot will engage said pin, and the latter, with the bars F connected thereto, be carried upward thereby. The boom J may now be swung around its center to the place for dumping, the drums l) and D, controlling respectively the lines L and L, braked, and, "the drum D released. Under these conditions, as is evident, the tension on the rope L will at once be thrown 'upon and transferred to the tag-line L that Under such conditions the sheave-member 3, to that shown in Fig. 4, and during this movement, the end of the slots 0 will engage and carry upward the pin 79 and the bars F, F, connected thereto, whereby the roller 7'' will be drawn u beneath the in-.
its the nose n out of engagement with the bucket. The, bucket will at once automatically revolve about the trunnions or pivot points att, and the dump be made.
What I'claim and wish to protect by Letters-Patent is:
In a boom-crane or similar hoisting ap paratus, having oppositely related hoisting and hauling ropes, the combination, with ashovel-bucket or similar receptacle pivotally suspendedwithin a bail at points on the sides thereof that are forward of the center of gravity of the bucket when empty, and behind said center when loaded, of a latchbar pivotally, connected to said bail at its upper end and projecting outwardly and downwardl at an angle, at the other end: said latchar bein of suitable form and dimensions to over ang and engage said bucket when thelatter is upright with re- 1311 spect to said bail, a sheave-like member revolubly mounted above and transversely of said bail, an unlocking-bar pivotally connected at its upper end to sald member in a suitable manner-to be engaged thereby and carried upwardly to a predetermined degree in a direction concentric of the axis of motion of said member when. the latter is revolved upwardly around said axis, and to permit said memberwto be revolved in the contrary direction without thereby engaging and moving said unlocking bar with relation to said 1atc11-bar, said unlocking bar extending downwardly to and beneath the projecting end of said latch-bar, together with a rope attached to and reeved around said member at its outer extremity, and extendand a hoist-rope connected to said bail at.
the center or axis of revolution of said member and extending to and around a sheave at the head of the boom on said apparatus and thence backwardly and connected to a similar drum, substantially as shown and described.
