GEARING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15,1912.
Application filed January 17, 1912. Serial No. 671,575.
To all whom it mag concern:
.Be it known that I, O'r'ro GEHRIOKE, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Leipzig-Lindenau, in Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gearing, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for hoisting loads, and more particularly to ma-. chines for hoisting loads to considerable heights, as in building operations and the like, as for example when pulley tackle is suspended at the top of a structure and is operated from below.
The object of the invention is to provide a machine with gearing enabling the load supporting hook or the like to be lowered at a speed greater than the speed at which it ascends.
One form of construction of this mecha nism is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is an elevation showing the gear in position for hoisting, and Fig. 2 an elevation, with parts broken away, showing the gear in position for lowering. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation viewed from the left hand side of Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 shows a detail of the mechanism.
In the drawing a: represents the hoisting chain, which works on a pulley b fixed to a driven shaft 0. To the latter is fixed a toothed gear wheel (Z which, for hoisting purposes, is meshed with a toothed wheel or pinion e on a countershaft f, another gear wheel 9 on the latter being then in mesh with a toothed wheel or pinion 2' fixed to an actuating shaft 72. actuated by means of a chain wheel is. To the shaft k are also fixed a gear wheel .9 and a ratchet wheel Z, the latter being engaged with a pawl m. The shafts h and f are both longitudinally movable, and movement thereof can be effected by means of a double armed lever n having slots engaged with pins 0 fixed to sleeves p. The latter are rotatably mounted between collars on the shafts h and The pins 0 work in guide slots 9 in the frame part' to which the lever 41. is pivoted. The lever n can be rocked by means of cords a attached to its ends.
Fig. 1 shows the mechanism in position for hoisting. By pulling one of the cords r the lever 71. can be rocked so as to shift the shafts h and f in opposite directions, whereby the wheels 03 and e are disengaged from each other and the wheel d is engaged with the toothed wheel 8. By this means the actuating shaft is connected directly to the shaft 0, and the hook at the end of the hoisting chain can be rapidly lowered. The pawl m is of sufficient width to remain engaged with the ratchet wheel Z during the shifting of the shafts.
Fig- 4. shows a device for retaining the shafts h and f in their end positions. Each of the said shafts has two annular grooves t 27-. A lever 00 pivoted near these shafts has two arms a a terminating in semicircular saddles o 41 adapted to fit into the said grooves, the lever 00 being positioned so that in each of the end positions of the slidable shafts the saddles o '0 can be lowered into two of the grooves, thus preventing axial displacement of the shafts. A spring w connected to the lever m tends to hold the saddles in engagement with the shafts, and a cord y is attached to the lever, for the purpose of disengaging the saddles when the shafts are to be displaced.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In combination, a frame, a driven shaft journaled therein, an axially movable counter-shaft j ournaled therein parallel with the driven shaft, an axially movable actuating shaft journaled in the frame parallel with the other shaft, a gear on the driven shaft, a pinion on the actuating shaft adapted to mesh with the gear on the driven shaft in one position of the actuating shaft; a gear on the counter-shaft adapted to mesh with the gear on the driven shaft in one position of the counter-shaft; a pinion on the countershaft and a gear on the actuating shaft adapted to mesh when the said shafts are shifted so as to disengage the driven-shaft gear from the pinion on the actuating shaft, and engage the gear on the counter-shaft with the gear on the driven shaft.
2. In combination, a frame, a driven shaft journaled therein, an axially movable counter-shaft journaled therein parallel with the driven shaft, an axially movable actuating shaft journaled in the frame parallel with the other shaft; a gear on the driven shaft, a pinion on the actuating shaft adapted to mesh with the gear on the driven shaft in one position of the actuating shaft, a gear on the counter-shaft adapted to mesh with the gear on the driven shaft in one position of the counter-shaft, a pinion on the countershaft and a gear on the actuating shaft adapted to mesh when the said shafts are' shifted so as to disengage the driven shaft gear from the pinion on the actuating shaft, and engage the gear on the counter-shaft with the gear on the driven shaft; with means for simultaneously shifting the counter-shaft and actuating shaft axially in opposite directions, substantially as described.
3. In combination, a frame, a driven shaft journaled therein, an axially movable counter-shaft journaled therein parallel with the driven shaft, an axially movable actuating shaft journaled in the frame parallel with the other shaft; :1 gear on the driven shaft, a pinion on the actuating shaft adapted to mesh with the gear on the driven shaft in one position of the actuating shaft; a gear on the counter-shaft adapted to mesh with the gear 011 the driven shaft in one position of the counter-shaft; a pinion on the counter-shaftand a gear on the actuating shaft adapted to mesh when the said shafts are shifted so as to disengage the driven-shaft gear from the pinion on the actuating shaft and engage the gear on the counter-shaft with the gear on the driven shaft; with means for retaining the counter-shaft and actuating shaft inthe positions to which they are shifted.
