BALL-ROLLING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND MORA CANDA, a citizen of the United States, of
America, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented a Ball-Rolling Appa ratus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to ball rolling apparatus and constitutes an improvement upon, and an addition to, the invention of' my prior application for the same purpose, Serial No. 832,284, filed October 21, 1919. The apparatus of that application comprises coacting grooved ball-forming rolls, together with means for moving one of said rolls to ward and from the other, and together-with one or more so-called'locators for determining the position between said rolls and the material to beacted upon. It is desirable that these locators shall always be directly above 01' below, as the case may be, the balls being formed. My present invention comprises means whereby this is accomplished. In case one only of the main rolls is shifted, according to mypresent invention, the said locator or locators is or are shifted corresponingly; but alternatively, I may keep the locator or locators stationary,and shift both ball-forming rolls, equally, but in opposite directions.
The object of my invention-is to maintain the locator or locators .of the said former machine directly above or below, as the case may be, the forming balls during the operation of rolling the same.
I will now proceed to describe my invention with reference to the accompanying drawings and will then point out the novel features in claims.

Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2: 1 designates a suitable frame for the machine, and
2 and 3 indicate grooved coacting ball-forming rolls, mounted in suitable bearings at and 5, bearings 5 being inounted to slide in ways 'in frame 1, and suitable means, as for example, ram devices 6, controlled by a valve 7, being provided for so sliding said bearings 5 and the roll 3. 8 and 9 designate what I term locators for determining the position between rolls 2 and 3. of the material to be rolled into balls, and for preventing the escape of the balls until such escape is desired. These locators may be transverse frames carrying idler rollers 10. For adjustment, ram devices 11 and 12 may be provided for these locators. As so far described the construction is that of my said prior application. 14 designates the material to be rolled'into balls.
In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, for maintaining the locators 8 and 9 directly above or beneath, respectively, the forming balls 14:, these locators are mounted to slide in ways 15 in the frame, and are connected by links 16 to levers 17 pivoted at 18 to the frame and pivoted at 19 to the bearings 5. Obviously, as the ram devices 6 move the roll 3 and its bearings 5 in and out, the locators 8 and 9 will be moved in the same sense as the roll, but through one-half the distance, thereby keeping these locators directly above or below, respectively, the balls 14 being formed.
In the alternative arrangement shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the locators 8 and 9 are stationary, and the rolls 2 and 3 are both moved in and out, their bearings, here designated as 4 and 5 respectively being formed to constitute nuts for screws 20 and 21, of'opposite pitch for the two rolls respectively, these screws being arranged to be turned by a shaft 22 and suitable bevel gearing 23. What I claim is: I 1. In a ball rolling apparatus, the combination of coacting grooved ball-forming rolls, locating means for/determining the position between said rolls ofmaterial to be acted upon, and means for separating said ball-forming rolls and bringing them to,-
gether, whereby said locating means is maintained in central position with respect to the -material to be acted upon.
2. In'a ball rolling apparatus ,the combination of coacting grooved ball-forming rolls, meansfor moving one of said rolls to- Ward and from the other, locating means for determining ,the position between said rolls of material to be acted upon, and means for moving said locating means with the movatoward and from the other, means for so moving said roll, locating means for determining the position between said rolls of material to be acted upon, and levers pivoted at one end to fixed points and connected at the other end to said rolls and means connecting said levers at mid-points to the said locating means. a
