METHOD OF CONSTRUCTING- IRON FENCES.

Specication of Letters :Patent No. 17,010, dated April '7, 1857.

V To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, IVILLIAM S. FULLER, of Millbury, in the county of lVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which drawings- Figure l shows the parts in place. Fig. 2 shows a section of the same. Fig. 3 shows the rings or collars, and Fig. 4 shows some parts hereinafter to be described, the same letters denoting the same parts where they occur.

The nature of my invention as distin guished from the usual modes of constructing felices, consists in making the pieces A, A, with the lugs B, B, or similar projections with a partial cavity, or hollow on the back to tit on-.the rods D, D, and then fitting t-he rings or collars C, C, so as to embrace two adjacent lugs and clasp them and the rod, the rods D being made with screws and nuts near the ends to retain the parts in place; the collars may be of the form sho-wn at F the opening being large enough to pass over the rod to put it on and then be turned so as to come partly over the lugs as shown in section in Fig. 4; when it is desired to make the fence with a face both sides, then place the pieces A A on both sides of the rods and make the collars to t on the four lugs at each joint, the patterns being so made as to correspond or fit when so placed back to back. To put up the fence, posts are to be set as usual and the ends of the rods firmly embedded in them or they may pass through and have screws to tighten them, the rings 0r collars if made whole should be irst strung on the rods, the number according to the length of the space between the posts, and the pieces put in place in the collars snug beginning at one en d or post and the last collar be pressed up and held firmly by the nut which keeps all parts together; an endless variety of patterns may be made and almost any kind or style of post used that may be preferred, and various methods of connecting the rods to them.

That I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The manner of connecting the pieces and rods together by means of the lugs and collars, when constructed and operating substantially as above set .forth and described.
