Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description at the end of which the invention will be claimed.
Generally stated, the invention comprises a welt of the type usable for nailed, Goodyear, McKay or stitchdown shoes comprising an integral strip of leather having a flat portion and an upstanding edge portion extending above the hair side of the fiat portion, there being between said fiat and upstanding portions a miter joint of which the apex is covered by a thin portion of the leather.
The invention also comprises improvements to be presently described and finally claimed.
In the following description reference will be made to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a strip of leather grooved to provide a covered miter joint.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a welt embodying features of the invention, and
Fig. 3 is a view, principally in section, illustrating the application of the welt to a nailed shoe.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates an integral strip of leather having a comparatively wide fiat portion 2 provided with parallel face portions 3 and 4, and with an edge portion 5 perpendicular to the face portions 3 and 4, and having an upstanding portion 6 at the other edge of the fiat portion. The upstanding portion 6 is defined by three flat faces 7 8 and 9, and a beveled corner 10. Between the flat and upstanding portions 1 and 6 there is a miter joint 11 of which the apex is covered by a thin portion of the leather 12. The members of the miter oint are pasted or otherwise joined together and are provided by grooving the strip, as indicated in Fig. 1, with a V-shape groove of which the walls slant at approximately 45.
1932. Serial No. 609,063.
In Fig. 3 the described welt is shown as stitched as at 13 to the sole of a nailed shoe, and in that application the welt adds to the appearance of the shoe and also serves to exclude. moisture.
I claim:
1. A welt of the type described comprising an integral leather strip having a flat portion on its hair side and an upstanding edge portion extending above the hair side of the flat portion and stopping short of the other edge of the hair side of the flat portion, there being between said flat and upstanding portions a closed miter joint of which the apex is covered by thin leather.
2. A welt of the type described comprising an integral leather strip having a flat portion and an upstanding edge portion extending above the hair side of the flat portion and provided with a beveled edge, there being between said flat and upstanding portions a closed miter joint of which the apex is covered by thin leather.
3. A welt of the type described comprising an integral strip of leather having a comparatively wide fiatportion provided with parallel face portions and with an edge portion perpendicular to the face portions, and having an upstanding portion at the other edge of the flat portions, said upstanding portion defined by three fiat faces and a beveled corner, there being between said flat and upstanding portions a closed miter joint of which the apex is covered by thin leather.
