Description

B. ENGLAND. Garment-Hanger.
No. 222,259. Patented Dec.-2, I879.

UNITED STATES PATENT QF' F ICE.
BODO ENGLAND, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GARMENT-HANGERS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,259, dated December 2, 1879; application filed August 1, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Bono ENGLAND, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garment-Hangers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification andaccompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a face View of a garment-hanger embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line as m, Fig. 1.
My invention relates to metallic loops used for hanging garments; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a loop or ring hinged to an eye, B, formed on or secured to a plate, 0, which is attached to a coat or other garment for the purpose of suspending or hanging the'same.
It will be seen that when the loop or ring A is not required for service it may be folded against the plate 0, and thus rest sufficiently flat,so as not to interfere with the fit and wear of the garment or disfigure the same.
When the garmentis to be suspended, or, as generally designated, hung up, theloop is swung upwardly, as shown by the dotted lines, Fig. 1, and so projects that it may be fitted on a hook, nail, or pin, and thus sustain the garment thereon.
It will be seen that the loop is strong, durable, and serviceable, and overcomes the objections to tapes and pieces of fabric heretofore employed as hangers or garment-loops.
In order to attach the plate 0 to the garment said plate has formed with or secured to it at one end a jprong or hook, D, which extends behind the plate, and is adapted to pierce the fabric of the garment, which being accomplished a rivet, E, is passed through the plate and fabric, and then headed on. either end, a washer being previously properly applied, as at a. By these means the plate is quickly and securely attached to the garment without possessing any play or looseness and without liability of being wrenched fromits position. 7
The eye B overhangs the plate 0 or extends beyond the face thereof, whereby the loop A may be folded flat or snugly against said plate, as more readily seen in Fig. 2, thus avoiding bulging of the garment at the place of application of the hanger. I
The plates 0 are also adapted as businesscards, as the name and location of the manufacturer of the garment and other information or matter may be readily printed or stamped on, or otherwise affixed to, said plates, the object whereof is evident.
I do not claim a chain secured by two plates to a garment for the same general purpose as my loop, such a device being shown in Patent No. 198,582.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. isi The loop A, in combination with; the plate (J, provided with the attaching prong or hook I), and rivet, E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
