W. TULLY. Apparatus for Securing Boiler Tubes.
(No Model.)
, e n e X R Y e 7 1 UNITED STATES PATENT FETCH WILLIAM TULLY, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
APPARATUS FOR SECURING BOILER-TUBES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,050, dated October 5, 1880.
Application filed August 26, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM TULLY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at the city of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Securing Boiler-Tubes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved and simple implement or apparatus for securely fastening the ends of boiler or other tubes within the apertures provided for them in the plates or other pieces which are to hold the said tubes in proper position in a steam-boiler or other structure.
My invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved implement or apparatus, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same.
In the accompanyingdrawings, the letterA indicates a hollow cylinder, made in two sections, 71 c, which are joined together by a tenon, 1,0n one section fitting a socket,2, in the other section, for a purpose to be hereinafter explained. The front end of the cylinder-section c is provided with three or more dovetailed recesses, 3, into which are fitted the dovetailed projections or shanks f on the lugs or pieces f. These three or more lugs or pieces f are provided with flanges, rims, or shoulders f, and are so constructed that they form so many segments of a circle, and when not expanded they fit closely together, so that a cylindrical piece is provided with an annular projecting flange at the rear thereof, and with a central aperture, within which works the tapering or conical end 0 of a mandrel, c. This mandrel c fits snugly within the cylinder, and at its rear end it is provided with a screw-threaded shank, 0 upon which is screwed a cap, 6 which confines in place the annular head or disk p of a screw-threaded rod, 10. The screwrod passes through the cap 6 and through a screw-threaded opening in a nut or cap-piece, 19, screwed upon the rear end of the cylindersection 1), whereby said screw-rod can freely rotate without rotating the mandrel.
The screw-rod is provided with an angular head, to which a wrench may be applied for rotating the rod and moving the mandrel for (No model.) Patented in England October 2!, 1879.
ward and backward; but other mechanical means may be substituted for such angular head.
By screwing the rod 19 inward the mandrel is forced forward, and the segments f caused to move radiallythat is to say, at right angles to the axis of the cylinder.
In the implement thus constructed the cylindrical piece formed by these segments f is designed to be inserted within the end of a boiler-tube with the annular rims or flanges f abutting against the outside of the tube, which thus forms a support for the implement, andprevents its entering the tube farther than is required.
When the lugs or segments are caused to slide outwardly by the action of the mandrel they necessarily become separated consequently there are three or more openings or spaces between the segments, so that there will be corresponding portions of the internal surface of the tube not in contact with any portion of the segments, unless the segments are caused to have a slight rotation. I therefore provide the internal surface of the cylindersection 0 with inclined grooves or chambers 0*, corresponding with projections 0*, provided upon the surface of the mandrel c, and the'said mandrel is provided with a pin, 0 which slides freely in a groove, 0 in the inside of the cylinder-section b, but prevents any rotary movement of the said mandrel when moved longitudinally. It will thus be seen that whenever the latter is moved forward the cylinder-section 0 has imparted to it a slight rotary movement, of which the segments f partake. By this arrangement the entire inner surface of the tube which is around the segments fis operated upon by the latter when they are expanded, and the tube is expanded evenly, and any projections in the metal are pressed out and a firm joint is made. To provide for this slight rotation of the cylinder-section c, I provide it with screws 1, which fit within slots Z in the tenon l of the section I), which slots are made of sufficient length to allow the sec- 7 tion 0 to rotate the required distance.
I-Iaving fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. An implement for expanding tubes in which are combined, substantially as herein described, a hollow cylinder, made in two sections, one of which carries at its front edge a series of radially-movable flanged segments, a mandrel arranged Within the cylinder, a screwrod passing through a screw-threaded opening in the rear portion of the cylinder and having its inner end loosely connected with the mandrel, and means for imparting a rotating movement to the section of the cylinder which carries the segments, all substantially as described.
2. In a tube-expander, the combination of the cylinder-sections b 0, connected together so as to permit the latter to have a slight rotation, the section 0 carrying a series of radially-movable flanged segments f, and provided on its inner surface with inclined grooves 0*, with the tapering or conical mandrel e,havin g the inclined projections 0",screw-shank c and cap 0, and the screw-rod 19, passing through a screw-threaded opening in the rear end of 20 the cylinder-section b, and having a head or disk, 19, loosely connected with the mandrel by the cap 0 all substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 25 Patent 233,050 Dated October 1, 1974 lnventofls) Richard S. Young, and Leo E. Hearn It is certified that error appears in the above-identified patent and that said Letters Patent are hereby corrected as shown below:
