This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for carrying luggage and other articles.
More specifically, the invention proposes a new and improved device for carting luggage, shopping bags, and other articles, which is adjustable to accommodate articles of different sizes.
The invention contemplates characterizing the new and improved adjustable moving device for luggage, and the like, by the fact that it includes a plate-like undercarriage for resting on and being moved along the ground. It is proposed that the undercarriage be supported on casters or wheels. A back is hingedly mounted on the undercarriage for folding flat against said undercarriage and for assuming an erect position when desired. It is proposed to associate a sectional rectangularly shaped frame having extendable and retractable sections, with the top portion of said back, upon which luggage of different sizes may be conveniently supported. 'It is also proposed to provide an extendable and retractable brace adjustably mounted upon said undercarriage for supporting said frame in a raised position.
It is proposed to provide said back with an extendable handle by which the device may be conveniently moved around.
A modified form of the new and improved adjustable movin device is proposed in which a pair of foldable side arms is arranged upon the sides of the back for carrying a market bag, or other bag, or objects.
Another object of the invention is the construction of a device as mentioned which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The new and improved adjustable moving device for luggage and other" articles, in accordance with this invention, includes a plate-like undercarriage l2 for resting on and being moved along the ground. The undercarriage is provided with casters E3, or wheels by which it may be con- 20 veniently moved. A back I4 is hingedly mounted on the undercarriage i2 and is capable of being folded down flat against the top face of the undercarriage i2. The back i4 may also be extended upwardly so as to assume an erect position upon the back end of the undercarriage i2. It is illustrated in this latter condition, upon the drawing. Hinges it connect the back M with the undercarriage i2 so that it may be folded down, or moved to its erect position.
A clamp bolt l8 is pivotally supporting on the bottom leaf of the hinge l6 and is extendable through a slot l9 formed in the top leaf of the hinge H5. The bolt 8 is provided with a wing nut 20 by which the leaves of the hinge It may be locked together so as to lock theback I4 in its upright position. A handle 2| is mounted on and extendable from the back M. This handle 2| is in the nature of an inverted U-shaped member. The arms of this inverted U-shaped member slidably engage through passages 23 formed through the back d. The inner ends of the arms of the handle 2! have enlarged heads 24 which prevent them from being completely drawn out from the openings 23. Each of the arms of the handle 2| is associated with a latch 25 by which the handle 2| may be latched in an extended position. Each latch 25 includes a bolt 26 Which is urged inwards by an expansion spring 21. The inner end of the bolt 25 is engageable with an opening 28 formed in the handle 2|. Each bolt 26 has a head 29 by which it may be manually moved.
A sectional rectangularly shaped frame 30 composed of four telescopically inter-engaged L- 'shapedsections 31-, 32, 33 and 34-, is hingedly mounted on the top portion of the back M. More particularly, the sections 33 and 34 have one of their arms engaging into a horizontal passage 36 formed in the back I l. The inner ends of these arms are formed with heads 31 and 38 which prevent their complete disengagement from the ends of the passage 36. It is possible to force the sections of the frame 30 together, or move them apart so as to decrease or increase the size of the frame. In this way the frame 35 may be adjusted for luggage of different sizes. The upper surface of the sections 33 and 34 may be provided with spaced grooves to facilitate placing of a shopping bag thereon if desired.
An extendable and retractable brace 40 is adjustably mounted on the undercarriage l2 and is for the purpose of supporting the frame 30 in a raised position. This brace to is composed of telescoping sections ii and 42. The section 4| has a top forked end 43 the fingers of which are provided with clamps 44 and 45 adapted to respectively clamp the adjacent arms of the sections 3| and 32. The telescopic sections 4i and 42 may be locked in extended, or retracted positions by a clamp screw 46 which threadedly engages one of the sections and abuts the other of the sections. The section 42 is pivotally supported by a pintle 4'! upon a slide 48 which is slidably mounted in a groove 49 formed in the top face of the undercarriage 12. The slide 48 is provided for the clam screw 56 which may be screwed down to lock the slide 48 in selected positions along the length of the groove 49. The back end of the groove 39 has an enlarged portion 5| into which the top forked end 43 of the section M may engage. The groove 49 and slide 48 are of dovetailed shapes (see Fig. 7). Handles 53 are mounted on the sides of the back It.
The operation and use of the adjustable moving device for luggage may be understood from the following:
In Fig, 1 it is illustrated in an open position ready to be used. A piece of luggage may be placed on the frame 39. Other articles may be placed on the top face of the undercarriage l2. The moving device may then be pushed along the ground. It eliminates the necessity of carrying the luggage and other articles.
The moving device may be easil folded when it is not being used. It may then be conveniently carried in a, piece of luggage, or stored away. The device may be folded by first forcing the clamps id and 45 from the adjacent arms of the sections 3i and 32. Then, the brace 45 may be folded down into the groove 49. The handle 21 is freed by opening the latches 25 and then is pushed down into the back 14. The back H3 is now freed b opening the clamp bolt l8 and nut 20 and then the back i i is folded down upon the top of the undercarriage IL. The frame 39 is swung around to be located upon the top face of the folded down back id. The frame 38 is collapsed by moving the various sections together.
In Figs. 8-10, a modified form of the invention has been disclosed which is very similar to the prior form, distinguishing merely in the fact that foldable side arms 55 are mounted on the sides of the back I i. Each of these foldable side arms 55 includes a main arm 55 which is pivotally supported by a pintle 5? at its back end on the side of the back l t. The foldable side arms also include brace arms 53 which are pivotally supported at their back ends by p-intles 59 on to the sides of the back Hi. The front ends of the brace arms 58 are provided with pins 60 which engage slots ,6! formed in the main arms 56. The slots 6| have recesses 62 into which the pins 60 may engage for locking the main arms 56 in horizontal positions. A shopping bag, or other bag, may be supported across the side arms 55.
In other respectsthis form of the invention is similar to that previously shown and like reference numerals identify like parts in each of the several views.
The adjustable moving device for luggage may be folded in substantially the same way as described relative to the prior form. The foldable arms 55 are folded against the sides of the back i4. Figure 10 illustrates the device in its folded condition.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. An adjustable moving device for luggage and the like, comprising a plate-like undercarriage for resting on and being moved along the ground, a back hingedly mounted on said undercarriage for folding flat against said undercarriage and for assuming an erect position upon the back end of said undercarriage, a sectional rectangularly shaped frame having extendable and retractable sections and hingedly mounted upon the top portion of said back, and an extendable and retractable brace adjustably mounted upon said undercarriage for supporting said frame in a raised position.
2*. An adjustable moving device for luggage and the like, comprising a plate-like undercarriage for resting on and being moved along the ground, a back hingedly mounted on said undercarriage for folding flat against said undercarriage and for assuming an erect position upon the back end of said undercarriage, a sectional rectangularly shaped frame having extendable and retractable sections and hingedly mounted upon the top portion of said back, and extendable and retractable brace adjustably mounted upon said undercarriage for supporting said frame in a raised position and a handle mounted on said back.
3. An adjustable moving device for luggage and the like, comprising a plate-like undercarriage for resting on and being moved along the ground, a back hingedly mounted on said undercarriage for folding flat against said undercarriage and for assuming an erect position upon the back end of said undercarriage, a sectional rectangularly shaped frame having extendable and retractable sections and hingedly mounted upon the top portion of said back, an extendable and retractable brace adjustably mounted upon said undercarriage for supporting said frame in a raised position and an inverted U-shaped handle mounted on said back and having its side arms engaging into openings extended downwards from the top edge of said back,
4. An adjustable moving device for luggage and the like, comprising a plate-like undercarriage for resting on and being moved along the ground, a back hingedly mounted on said undercarriage for folding flat against said undercarriage and for assuming an erect position upon the back end of said undercarriage, asectional rectangularly shaped frame having extendable and retractable sections and hingedly mounted upon the top portion of said back, and an extendable and retractable brace adjustably mounted upon said undercarriage for supporting said frame in a raised position and an inverted U-shaped handle mounted on said back and having its side arms engaging into openings extended downwards from the top edge of said back, said side arms being provided with heads for preventing them from coming out from said passage.
5. An adjustable moving device for luggage and the like, comprising a plate-like undercarriage for resting on and being moved along the ground, a back hingedly mounted on said undercarriage for folding flat against said undercarriage and for assuming an erect position upon the back end of said undercarriage, a sectional rectangularly shaped frame having extendable and retractable sections and hingedly mounted upon the top portion of said back, and an extendable and retractable brace adjustably mounted upon said undercarriage for supporting said frame in a raised position, said frame having four angle shaped sections telescopically engaged with each other.

An adjustable moving device for luggage and the like, comprising a plate-like undercarriage for resting on and being moved along the ground, a back hingedly mounted on said undercarriage for folding flat against said undercarriage and for assuming an erect position upon the back end of said undercarriage, a sectional rectangularly shaped frame having extendable and retractable sections and hingedly mounted upon the top portion of said back, and an extendable and retractable brace adjustably mounted upon said undercarriage for supporting said frame in a raised position, said frame having four angle shaped sections telescopically engaged with each other, said frame being hingedly mounted at one of its sides upon said back.

An adjustable moving device for luggage and the like, comprising a plate-like undercarriage for resting on and being moved along the ground, a back hingedly mounted on said undercarriage for folding flat against said undercarriage and for assuming an erect position upon the back end of said undercarriage, a sectional rectangularly shaped frame having extendable and retractable sections and hingedly mounted upon the top portion of said back, an extendable and retractable brace adjustably mounted upon said undercarriage for supporting said frame in a raised position and means for latching said back in its erect position.

An adjustable moving device for luggage and th like, comprising a plate-like undercarriagefor resting on and being moved along the ground, a back hingedly mounted on said undercarriage for folding flat against said undercarriage and for assuming an erect position upon the back end of said undercarriage, a sectional rectangularly shaped frame having extendable and retractable sections and hingediy mounted upon the top portion of said back, an extendable and retractable brace adjustably mounted upon said undercarriage for supporting said frame in a raised position, and means for locking said brace in various positions on said undercarriage.

An adjustable moving device for luggage and the like, comprising a plate-like undercarriage for resting on and being moved along the ground, a back hingedly mounted on said undercarriage for folding flat against said undercarriage and for assuming an erect position upon the back end of said undercarriage, a sectional rectangularly shaped frame having extendable and retractable sections and hingedly mounted upon the top portion of said back, and an extendable and retractable brace adjustably mounted upon said undercarriage for supporting said frame in a raised position, said brace being pivotally connected with a slide engaging a groove formed in the top face of said undercarriage.

An adjustable moving device for luggage and the like, comprising a plate-like undercarriage for resting on and being moved along the ground, a back hingedly mounted on said undercarriage, for folding flat against said undercarriage and for assuming an erect position upon the back end of said undercarriage, a. sectional rectangularly shaped frame having extendable and retractable sections and hingedly mounted upon the top portion of said back, an extendable and retractable brace adjustably mounted upon said undercarriage for supporting said frame in a raised position, and a pair of foldable side arms mounted on the sides of said back.
