extended from the ends of the visor around the back of the crown, said band having an inner layer attached at its bottom edge to the bottom edge of the crown and at its top folded over to continue into an outer layer normally superimposed on the inner layer and provided with a means for retaining the band in its upwardly bent position.

Still further, the holding means is in the form of narrow tabs extending inwards of the ends of the visor from the bottom corners of the outer layer and releasably engageable with a holding means in the form of a cloth strip extended along the back of and attached to the visor, thereby eliminating the attachment of the tabs directly to the crown.

Still further, it is proposed to characterize such holding means by buttons, snap fasteners or other similar elements arranged between the tabs and the strip of cloth material for retaining the band in its folded position.

A further object of the invention proposes constructing the band to permit it to be completely dependent from the bottom of the crown to have the ends of the tabs attached to each other at a position beneath the chin in a manner to cover the ears and back of the head during inclement weather.

Still another object of the invention proposes the provision of an elastic strip for acting in such a manner as to draw the tabs together to reduce the size of the crown.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:

Fig. 1 is a frontal perspective View of a cap constructed in accordance with this invention.

Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the cap with the parts arranged as in Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a detail section taken on line 3-3 of I Fig. 1.

Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but illustrating the cap on a wearers head and with the parts readjusted for inclement weather.

Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the elastic band.

1 Claim. (C1. 2-1720 The head :wear,. according to. this invention, is in the form of a cap Ill having a crown II provided with a frontvisor I2. The crown II is formed of several pieces of cloth material secured together to produce thedesired-shapeand the interior of the crown II is formed with a lining I3.

A band of cloth material I4 is extended around the sides and back of the crown II and of the cap Iil from the ends of the visor I2. The band I4 has its bottom edge attached to the bottom edge of the crown I I by means of a line of stitches (not shown), which line of stitches may also secure the bottom edge of the lining I3 in place. The band It is folded over to present a depending outer layer I! which then is superimposed on an inner layer I5. The front bottom corners of the outer layer I! continue into tabs I8. The tabs I8 extend slightly inwards of the ends of the visor I2, and each tab is provided with a button 2! adjacent its respective end, the utility of which will become apparent below.

A strip of cloth material I9 is extended across the crown-adjacent end of the visor I2 and is securely attached thereto by means of stitches (not shown). The end portion of tabs are provided with buttonholes I8a adapted to be engaged with buttons 22 mounted upon the ends of the cloth strip I9 and provides a means for releasably connecting the tabs I8 to the strip I9. The engagement of the tabs I8 with the strip I9 eliminates the necessity of connecting the ends of the tabs I8 directly to the crown II, removing stress and strain from the crown and. applying these stresses and strains to the strip I9 attached to the visor I2.

Since the visor I2 is of a stiffer, more durable construction than the crown II of the cap I0, it will be better able to withstand the stresses and strains and materially lengthen the life of the cap I0.

There is also provided an elastic strip 35 to be extended between the buttons 22 mounted upon the strip I9 of cloth material. The ends of the elastic strip 35 are each formed with a plurality of openings 36 which are selectively engageable with said buttons 22 for contracting the side of the crown II to fit different head sizes, and as stated above, the buttons 22 are also engageable with buttonholes I8a through the tabs I8. One of the openings 36 at each end of the elastic strip 35 may also take the buttons 2| on the ends of the tabs I8.

In Fig. 4 the band I4 is shown in its extended downward position in which it covers the wearers ears and the back of the head, providing addipreferred embodiment of our invention, it is to be understood that we do not limit ourselves to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention v as defined in the appended claim.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

A cap having a crown provided with a front visor, a folded band extending from the ends of said visor around the back of said crown and having an inner layer attached at its bottom edge to the bottom edge of said crown and at the top continuing into an outer layer superimposed upon said innerlayer and separate therefrom at its 5 1,547,140

bottom edge, and said outer layer having narrow tabs extending slightly inwards of the ends of said visor, a strip of cloth material extending along the back of and attached to said visor, and means for releasably connecting said tabs with said strip, said means comprising buttonholes formed in said tabs and engageable with complementary buttons mounted on said strip, and an'elastic strip ,adjustably mounted in position between the buttons on first named strip for controlling the size of the crown of said cap.
