Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES DEALLY, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
KEY.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,457, dated May 29, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES DEALLY, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson, in the State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved EXtension-Key to Obviate the Necessity of a Long Key to Open Thick Doors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. I construct my key in any of the known forms and cut off the handle (A). I then bore a hole up the stem (B) into which may be inserted a ferrule (C) or similar contrivance through which moves the slide (D) which is fastened to the handle (A) the slide (D) is provided with a washer or flange (Gr) which is secured to it to prevent its beingV drawn completely out; the slide (D) is also provided with a double spring, one end (E) to prevent it when drawn out from shutting up; the other end F to prevent it when shut from sliding out too easily.
In using this invention it is only necessary to draw out the slide (D) as far as possible when the spring prevents its closing; and in closing it, it is only necessary to press on the spring (E) then push in the slide and the spring (E) will secure it in its place.
I do not claim broadly the making of the shank in two pieces, one moving within the other but:
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination of the slide D, and spring F, with the stem B, in the manner herein shown and described, so that the key may be elongated when wanted for use, and closed up or shortened when not in use, all
as set forth.
JAMES DEALLY. )Vitnesses Jos. CLEMENT, GEO. BRoBT'roN.
