REMovABLE ovEN DooR STRUCTURE Filed DeG. 20.*1956 2 sheets-sheet 2 INVENTOR.
GEORGE R. SHERMAN HIS ATTORNEY tional forces tend to prevent accidental removal of the door.
When it is desired to remove door 3 (for cleaning purposes, for example) it is merely necessary to place it in the partially open or broil position as shown in Fig. 4 in which no rotational force is applied by spring 6 to the hinge mechanism. The door is then lifted by means of handle 4 along a line parallel to the plane of the door suiciently to raise guide surface 25 out of hinge member 14 after which a vertical lifting force is applied so as to tilt prong member 23 slightly with respect to box-like member 14, thus withdrawing ledge 24 from aperture 13. As the door is removed, the end of prong member 23 releases spring21 so that stop element 20 is carried into aperture 20a and extends into engagement with locking formation 22 on hinge member 13. By this means hinge member 14 isv retained in the position shown in Fig. 5 so that it will be ready to receive door 3' when the door is replaced.
While I have shown and described a particular embodiment of my invention, I do not desire the invention to be limited to the particular construction disclosed, and I intend by the appended claims to cover all modications within the true spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim is:
1. A door structure for a range oven or the like comprising a body defining the front opening of the oven, an oven door adapted to close said opening, a rst hinge member rigidly secured to said body at the bottom edge of said opening, a second hinge member pivotally secured to said rst hinge member and adapted to support said door for movement between its closed position and a partially open position and a fully open position, a door supporting member secured to said door and arranged to removably engage said second hinge member, a stop formation on said first hinge member, a spring biased stop element on said second hinge member, engageable with said stop formation when said second hinge member is in said partially open position and said door is removed therefrom, and means on said door supporting member for disengaging said stop element from said stop formation when said door is in place on said second hinge member.
2. A door structure for a range oven or the like comprising a body defining the front opening of the oven, an oven door adapted to close said opening, a first hinge member rigidly secured to said body at the bottom edge of said opening, a second hinge member pivotally secured to said first hinge member and adapted to support said door for movement between its closed position and a partially open position and a fully open position, means for applying a force to said second hinge member biasing said door toward its closed position, means for neutralizing said closing force when said door is in its partially open position, a door supporting member secured to said door and arranged to removably engage said second hinge member, first and second interlocking ledge portions on said second hinge member and said door supporting member respectively, said ledge portions being so positioned that said rst ledge portion is urged into interlocking position with respect to said second ledge portion by said force applying means when said door is in any position other than its partially open position and said door is pulled away from said body.
3. A door structure in accordance with claim 1 in which box-like member and said door supporting member in cludes a projecting memberfadapted to telescopically engage said box-like member 4. A door structure in accordance with claim 3 in which said stop element is secured to one end of a leaf spring supported within said box-like member so as to project through an opening therein, and said projecting member is arranged to engage said spring and withdraw said stop element from said opening.
5. A door structure in accordance with claim 2 in which said second hinge member includes a hollow elongated box-like member and said door supporting member includes a projecting member adapted to telescopically en gage said box-like member.
6. A door structure in accordance with claim 5 in which said box-like member includes a wall parallel to the pivotal axis of said hinge members having a rectangular aperture therein, said rst ledge element is formed on a marginal edge of said aperture, and said second ledge element ex# tends outwardly frorn said projecting member.
7. A door structure in accordance with claim 5 in which said projecting member includes a plurality of con- Vex guide surfaces spaced so that said projecting member may be partially withdrawn from said box-like member and tilted with'respect thereto so as to disengage said ledge portions.
8. A door structure for a range oven or the like com? prising a body defining the front opening of the oven, an
oven door adapted to close said opening, a first hinge mem'l ber rigidly secured to said body at the bottom edge of said opening, a second hinge member pivotally secured to said rst hinge member and adapted to support said door for movement between its closed position and a partially open position and a fully open position, said second hinge member including a hollow elongated box-like member having a wall parallel to the pivotal axis of said hinge members provided with a rectangular aperture therein, a first ledge element formed on a marginal edge of said aperture, a stop formation on said first hinge member, a stop element secured to one end of a leaf spring supported within said box-like member so as to project through an opening therein, said stop element being engageable with said stop formation when said second hinge member is in a position corresponding to the partially open position of said door and said door is removed therefrom, means for applying a force to said second hinge member biasing it toward its closed door posititon, means for neutralizing said closing force when said door is in its partially open position, a projecting door supporting member secured to said door and arranged to telescopically engage said box-like member and engage said leaf spring so as to With-k draw said stop element from said opening, a second ledge portion on said door supporting member located thereony so as to interlock with said first ledge portion when said door supporting member and said box-like member are in telescopic engagement, and a plurality of convex guide surfaces on said door supporting member, said guide surfaces being so located that said door supporting member may be partially Withdrawn from said box-like member and tilted with respect thereto so as to disengage saidl ledge portions.
