CORN-PLANTER CHECK ROWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 294,964, dated March 11, 1884.

To all whom it 11mg concern Be it known'that I, GEORGE WV. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galesburg, in the county of Knox and State ofI1linois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Planter Check-Rowers;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to corn planter checkrowers of that class in which a stretched tappetwire is used to actuate the check-rower; and the invention consists in the use of an adjustable guard, which, while in one position, will retain the tappet-wire in one position relatively to the'front guide-pulley and the forked lever, and which may be swung outwardl y into another positiomto permit of placing the wire on and removing it from the check rower without bending the wire, all as hereinafter fully described. In the annexed drawings, which illustrate one method of applying my improvement to a check-rower, Figure 1 is a top plan of one end of a check-rower. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation in line as m in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is same elevation as Fig. 2, but the parts shown in different relative positions from that shown at Fig. 2.

These parts, as shown, are of ordinary construction, and their mode of operation is too well known to require any description herein.
In check rowers of the class I have shown,
a guard-finger, H, is used to retain the wire in proper contact with the front guide-pulley, D, and the forked lever, and the position of this guard H, to be effective for that purpose, is about as shown at Fig. 1; hence in removing the wire from the check-rower and replacing it thereon, as is necessary at the ends of the rows being planted, the wire must be more or less bent if the guard-finger H is fixed in its position, as it has heretofore been. The
lower end of my improvedguard-finger is seated in a slot, 0, in the head 0, and is held therein by a pin, 1', which passes through a slot, 71/, in said guard-finger. As shown by full lines at Fig. 2, the guard-finger is held in position and from swinging outwardly at its upper end by means of its lower part and side h, resting against the rear wall, 0, of the slot 0. By sliding the finger H upwardly until the pin 43 rests in the lower end of the slot h, as shown by full lines at Fig. 3, it (the finger H) may then be turned or swung outwardly at its upper end, as shown by dotted lines at Figs. 2 and 3, in which position it will be held by its lower part, h, resting against the wall 0. Vhile the guard-finger H is in the position shown by fulllines in the drawings it will retain the tappet-wire in place, and while in the position shown by dotted lines it will permit of placing the wire or removing it readily and easily and without bending the wire.
This invention is applicable to any cheekrower in which a guard-finger is used adjacent to the front guide-pulley.
It will be evident that the guard-finger may be held in position by a latch, or otherwise; hence I do not limit my claims to the specific method I have shown of holding it; but
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a check-rower, in combination, a supporting-head, forked lever, front guidepulley, and a guard-ii nger adapted to swing away from said guide-pulley, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a check-rower, in combination, a sup- I porting-head, forked lever, front guide-pulley, and a guardfinger hinged tothe supporting-head by means of a slot, 0, and pin 1 and provided with a lower part, it, adapted to come in contact with the part c of the slot 0, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a check-rower, in combination, a supporting-head, O, forked lever, front guide-pub ley, and a guard-finger, H, constructed and hinged in the head 0, substantially as and for for the purpose specified.
